About this ebook

Onyx was dark and lovely. And she was delighted to be. She was an elegant, classy girl, working in the finance industry as an investment broker. She could hold her own with any counterpart, regardless of gender or generation, ethnicity or experience.

Candace had a good heart. It was her mind that held her captive. She couldn't seem to shake those negative thoughts that kept popping up in her head. Thoughts that she didn't quite measure up, that she wasn't good enough. She couldn't bring herself to believe in a life without constantly having to grapple with those thoughts.

Lorraine wished life could be the way it was before she learned of its ups and downs. She'd say to herself, "Wouldn't it be nice to go back? To go back to a time when life was simple and good?"  But she knew she couldn't go back. She knew if things stayed the same, she would never be challenged. She would never grow. Not physically, not mentally, not emotionally. You can't move forward while looking back.

Amber was the kind of friend who would always be there. When she said, "If you need me, call me", she wasn't just saying what a friend was supposed to say.  She meant it. If you needed her, she would be on your doorstep, whether you needed a sounding board, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to share a gallon of Blue Bell.

After you've been introduced to Onyx, to Candace, to Lorraine, and to Amber, as you continue reading, you will get to know each of them even better.  Life Links gives you a front row seat and an in-depth look at their lives, exploring each girl's relationship with her mother, with her father, with her best friend, with dating and marriage, with her church family, with herself, and with her God.

If you don’t know Robin Smith, this is your chance to get to know her. Life Links is a beautiful book. The narratives are cinematic in scope, and reading it feels like enjoying a quiet conversation with an old friend. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate storytelling at its best. Life Links captures the complexities and triumphs of women of color. Recognizing the influences of African American women – family, childhood friendships, and church life – the relationships in this book tell how they mold and meld our personalities as well as our character. The intriguing questions allow us to reflect and possibly rethink matters from a different perspective. As each of the four friends grows in age and maturity, they learn more about themselves and resist the ever-present struggle to be accepted by others. We can all learn from their persistence.

    Foreword

It is an honor to pen the foreword for this exciting book on relationships. Relationships are so powerful in that they can determine our destiny. They are multifaceted and can be complicated. As we relate to others, we can’t control their perception of us, but we are responsible for what we convey to them, through our attitudes, and through our character, or lack thereof.

In Life Links, you will get to know each of these four women intimately as you explore how they navigate different relationships.

I have had the privilege of authoring a book on marital relationships. I was married to my husband Vernon for 48 years before his passing in 2018. In addition, I have spent the last 30 years speaking to millions of people across the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Everywhere I travel in this world, I realize one thing: God created us to be relational. The cultures may be different, but the need for healthy relationships is the same.

First, we need to have an authentic relationship with God. Second, we need to have meaningful relationships with one another. And finally, we need to be honest when relating to our true selves. In her book Life Links, my sister and friend Robin has done an exceptional job in the way she has communicated the various dynamics of relationships, and how we can manage them in healthy ways.

Robin is a remarkable woman, and she is a creative story‐teller. She loves people with a real passion, and she has the ability to embrace people wherever they are, without compromising her own Godly principles. She is a safe place for people to come and find acceptance, absent of judgment. She is committed to loving her friends unconditionally, and she brings a
