The World Health Organization estimates that obesity has tripled over the last three decades. This has led to an increase in associated diseases. The two most prevalent are diabetes and heart ailments. Thirty-nine percent of adults are currently overweight globally, another staggering 17 percent are obese. In the United States, 69 percent of adults and 19 percent of children below 19 years are overweight. The World Health Organization estimates that the numbers will keep increasing over time if people do not change (World Health Organization).
Luckily, more people are realizing the negative effects of poor nutrition. A good number continues to adopt healthier diet options. The plant-based diet is one of the most preferred healthy diets. This is particularly true among young people. The Guardian showed a 350 percent increase in U.K. people opting for a plant-based diet since 2006 (The Guardian, 2016). The majority of these people have adopted veganism.
The trend is very promising, and nutritionists want to promote the lifestyle globally.
