Chapter 1: Vital Negotiation Abilities
When do you really need strong negotiation skills? In other words, each day.
Whether you're working out the details of a multimillion-dollar business offer, designating obligations among your project team, or just bargaining over where to order takeout, you're negotiating. And the better you do it, the more likely you'll be happy with the result.
What's more, if you use your negotiation skills really well, the people you are negotiating with will be happy, also.
What Is Negotiation?
Negotiation includes 2 or more people finding an appropriate resolution to a shared issue. Effective mediators control the process and come away with a result they're gratified with-- whether or not they have made compromises along the way.
Negotiation isn't limited to big decisions.
When you're working with others, much of your time is spent negotiating-- even if it's just deciding whose turn it is to collect the coffees!
For projects to be effective, roles, strategies, targets, and due dates all need to be concurred, ideally to everyone's fulfillment.
And there are also times when a very obvious negotiation process is occurring, like setting payment terms with a customer, or concurring the agreement details for a new job.
So, what are the abilities you really need to negotiate well?
Do Your Homework
Whatever technique you require to the settlements themselves, preparation is key.
Common sense should tell you how much detail to get into. Showing up with reams of documents to discuss a team member's request for time off would likely trigger amusement, discouragement or resentment.
