Over the past two decades, researchers have whittled down to five those clusters of cognitions, feelings, motivations, and behaviors that we mean by character aspects. Extraversion, and by reasoning introversion, is chief among them, in addition to neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness-- psychology's so-called Huge Five. Even though introverts and extraverts might look like they come from different worlds, introversion and extraversion exist on a constant measurement that's generally distributed. There are several extremely extraverted folk, and some extreme introverts, while the majority of us share some extravert and some introvert traits.

While there's no accurate dividing line, there are plenty of introverts around. It's just that affective predispositions lead all of us to overestimate the number of extraverts among us (they are noisier and hog the spotlight). Usually confused with shyness, introversion doesn't imply social reticence or discomfort. Rather than being averse to social engagement, introverts end up being overwhelmed by way too much of it, which clarifies why the introvert is all set to leave a party after an hour and the extravert gains steam as the night goes on.

Scientists now understand that, even though introverts have no unique benefit in intelligence, they do seem to process more information than others in any specific situation. To absorb it, they do best in silent environments, interacting one on one. Furthermore, their brains are less based on external stimuli and benefits to feel good about themselves.

As a result, introverts aren't driven to seek big hits of positive emotional stimulation-- they would rather find meaning in life than bliss-- making them fairly immune to the quest for fun that penetrates
