About this ebook

Author, Gill Mudditt is a scientist and teacher with a passion for health restoration. In Is My Body Important? she has condensed 30 years of studying how to be healthy (and expert mentoring from Dr Alan Tomlinson, world renowned expert on health and supplementation) into an easy read for people who are ready to make some simple changes towards caring for their bodies in a better way.

“Our body is where we will live the rest of our lives; Gill Mudditt has written its user’s manual. Follow her advice and you will almost certainly be healthier and you may well live longer.”

- Justin Cohen, international speaker and author.

“I have known Gill for the past 15 years as colleague, as work/life coach and as friend. Her passion for complimentary health and restorative health has been her constant driving force. Her scientific upbringing has questioned everything from nebulous claims of ingredients to her scepticism of keeping people unhealthy by treating only the symptoms. Her book is a layman’s guide written in unscientific language so that the majority of people can understand the basis of wellness and continued health. Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the language for it comes from years of study, reading and caring about people’s health. Invite her to talk to your staff, groups, and even go and see her professionally and take seriously her suggestions.’’

To your abundant health, Leo Schoots, Work/life/relationship coach

“Hippocrates said: ‘Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food.’ This book gives helpful and user friendly advice on how to use food, supplements, water and regular exercise to prevent illness and attain good health and longevity. A good read for anyone who takes medicine only as a last resort.”

- Shirley Norman, Dietician

We can all live our lives just thinking about ourselves and just doing the things we enjoy. There are others who live to improve the lives of others and assist them to make good choices in their lives. I am very proud of one of the people in my life Gill Mudditt who has always had a strong desire to improve the lives of others in many ways. She has come from a medical background and is very knowledgeable. Gill learnt more about the value of taking vitamins from my late husband Dr. Alan Tomlinson. Good Health is one of the main principles which Gill lives by. Unless we live lives which include Good Health, Physical Fitness and Emotional Health we are unable to function to our maximum potential. Read Gill’s book it could change your life.

Although I am a scientist, this is not intended to be a scientific book; it is written as an easy read for the concerned layman who realises he/she wants to make some simple changes to improve their health and the health of their family and is not sure where to start or what will benefit them the most. For this reason I have not attempted to give scientific references for every statement I’ve made – I have written what I believe to be true and you can choose to agree or disagree with me as you see fit. Over the years I have heard or read about these ideas and have come to believe they are true without always remembering where I learnt about them. In this book I mostly write about general health and not disease, and many of my ideas would have been called common sense if they had been spoken a few decades back before the world was changed.

For a more detailed scientific discussion of this subject I recommend Live Life Well written by my mentor, the late Dr Alan Tomlinson. The book is available at a special price via my website

First and foremost I must acknowledge my mentor of 30 years, the late Dr Alan Tomlinson, one of the foremost experts in health restoration in the world. Dr Alan taught me that we have a choice to stay healthy and that life will be much richer and more rewarding if we live in a body that is happy, energetic and functioning well. He had the ability to research the latest scientific knowledge and explain it in simple and interesting ways so that the rest of us could understand how our bodies work and the effects our lifestyle choices have on our health. Dr Alan, you were an inspiration to us all when it came to ensuring our optimum health, but also, as a Godly person; you believed in us and cared about us all. Your passion for life and health was infectious, and we mourn your passing.

I would also like to thank Anne Pringle (dietician) and Celecia Pleass (pharmacist) for always being willing to answer my questions and give explanations based on their vast knowledge as experts in their respective fields. Then, to my parents, Dr I O B Spencer and Dr E C Wilkinson, for inspiring me to have a lifetime of interest in better health for all. Finally, to my son Dr Jonathan Mudditt my thanks for his expert advice and computer skills and for drawing the diagrams and graphs, and my friend Leo Schoots, life coach, for tirelessly reading and rechecking my manuscript for any adjustments that were required.

    Introduction

My explanations in this book are not intended to be technical or scientific – there are lots of books like that if you are looking for details. This book is about you and how you respond to life, the choices you make and the effects they have on your well-being and quality of life. It’s about:

Is your body important? Well, is it?

Have you thought about it, or do you just take it for granted? Whose responsibility is your body and is it worth looking after it? When I asked my younger son (then 25 years old) this question, he quickly replied, Of course it’s important because it has to last me for the next 80 years and I don’t want it giving me trouble! I presume that since you opened this book you also value your body and want to take care of it.

Do you know that your body talks to you? Any symptom that you experience is your body saying All is not well in here. Does that matter to you? What is your response?

Example 1 You have a headache so you take a headache pill. The short term effect is pain relief, but what have you done? Basically you have just told your body to shut up! There are over 100 causes of headaches. A few of them are serious and denial won’t make the cause go away, but 80% of headaches are just caused by dehydration. Have you tried drinking two glasses of water when you feel a headache coming on? Some headaches are due to hormonal imbalances and others to muscle spasms; have you tried a herbal supplement to balance the hormones or visited a chiropractor for an adjustment?

Example 2 Your joints are a bit stiff and sore. Do you ignore the symptoms until the doctor needs to prescribe pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs because you have arthritis or do you think about whether you are eating (and drinking) foods that make your body acidic and which are drying out your joints? If you exercise a lot your joints need even more care. Before your joints are so damaged they need replacing, consider adding an Omega 3 supplement to lubricate them and possibly a joint repair formula with chondroitin, glucosamine and MSM. There are several excellent formulations with these ingredients.

The best way to stay healthy is to make wise choices most of the time and this book will guide you to do that in ten easy steps. Pick the ones relevant to you and apply them consistently to enjoy better quality of life.

Remember, you are important and valuable. You live in a body while you are on earth so your body is important too. Care for it and (barring accidents) you should be able to enjoy good quality of life well into your 80s and beyond. I trust that reading this book will make it easier for you to make the right choices for your body. Throughout the book I make suggestions of supplementary ingredients which will help the area under discussion, and if you email me I can give you further advice. The supplements I recommend are available through my website www.ismybodyimportant.com but of course you are free to buy elsewhere and choose other brands if you prefer.

    Chapter 1

    Getting the Balance Right

On the cover of this book you’ll see three interlocking circles like those below.

Nutrition, physical fitness and emotional wholeness are all required for good health. Balance all three and we have the W or Wellness in the centre.

These circles show that there are three main areas where our choices will affect our health profile. Balance is the key to well-being; neglecting one area or over-emphasising another leads to ill health in some form or another.

Exercise is widely recognised as being good for you, and whereas many of us love sport and enjoy keeping fit, there are always some who take it to the extreme, wearing out their bodies without in any way compensating for the over-use. At the other end of the spectrum are those who have difficulty getting off the couch. Look at Chapter 5 to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of exercise.

Nutrition has been my speciality and passion for the last 30 years and more. I have learnt that what I choose to eat matters hugely over time in deciding my health profile. Almost all dis-eases are indications that the body is not at ease; something is not functioning well because it does not have enough of the nutritional resources it requires to function correctly. Simple! As you would have noticed when you last cut yourself, your body has built-in self-healing skills. That also applies to your bones if they break and to every other part of your body. However, it all goes wrong when the resources are not adequate. Whose job is it to understand what is wrong? Yours – preferably before it is a big problem requiring medication to suppress symptoms or other expensive medical intervention.

Think of when you’re following a recipe to bake a cake – if you leave out one of the ingredients, even a small one like the baking powder perhaps, the cake fails. In a much more complex way our bodies are like that. There are millions of recipes or chemical reactions taking place every minute and they all require ingredients or resources to function correctly. To function well your body requires:

Carbohydrates – complex whole grains, not simple ones like sugar.

Protein – about 100g per day is essential, but not a lot more.
