Sexual Health
and
Reproduction
This circle of sexuality revolves around the attitudes, behaviors and facts that our culture has assigned to sexuality. Its major components consist of: Sexual behavior, anatomy & physiology, sexual/reproductive systems, contraception/abortion, and sexually transmitted infections.
WHY DO GIRLS HAVE SPERM?
A t the age of 23, I was a biology teacher in a Florida public high school. (I know what you’re thinking: Blonde, mid-twenties, Florida teacher… The answer to your question is, NO! I did NOT sleep with any of my students.
Sorry, Kids. But I did quit my job and start writing sex books, so I guess that’s half as exciting.)
Anyway one day, while teaching my students how yeast makes bread rise, I received a random question about yeast infections… Of course… As I tried hard to stay on task, the students kept shouting out irrelevant sex inquiries.
I did my best to ignore them and focus on the process of fermentation, but stopped in mid-sentence and turned to the class when I heard the most unnerving question asked by a quiet student named Ethan.
Miss Puck,
he asked. Why do girls have sperm?
As the class laughed at him, I softly and adoringly answered, Ethan, Sweetie… Girls do not have sperm.
I turned back to the white board and tried once again to focus on the intended lesson. Then, I heard his unsettling, defensive reply being shouted over the roar of laughter which had still not faded. Yes, they do! Haven’t you heard, girls cum too!?!?
At that moment, it was apparent to me that these kids needed to know more about sex than the leavening agent in bread. I thought to myself, Maybe if I had just used alcohol fermentation as the example, they would have stayed with me… But I was brought back to the sex question when I saw the confused and angry look on Ethan’s face. What was so disturbing about the whole-wheat thing was that Ethan was a sixteen-year-old BOY, who was the father of a two-year-old, with a second on the way.
America is not a tolerant country when it comes to sexuality. When it comes to education, it is one of the most sexually repressed countries in the world. I would know, considering that I worked in several school systems that did not offer proper sex education classes. This wouldn’t have bothered me so much if half of my students weren’t pregnant.
Since America places such a stigma on sexuality, our sexual education system fails us. Why? Well, parents ignore talking to their kids about it because they think the schools will tell them what they need to know; and the school systems refuse to teach anything because they don’t want to deal with drama from the parents who don’t want their kids to know too much
! You have churches telling kids that if they have sex before marriage, they’ll go to hell, and kids’ best friends’ older brothers explaining that blow jobs aren’t really considered sex! What the fuck? No wonder kids are knocking each other up before their high school graduation. They have
