Preface for the Boys
Weird things are happening to your body. You don’t know what it is and you’re not sure why it’s there. This book will help you and your parents get through the roller coaster of life called puberty. You will learn about your own body, girls’ bodies, sex, sexually transmitted diseases, sperm, infertility, and everything in-between. You and your parents can read this book cover to cover or simply use it as a reference; either way, it will be a useful tool through this strange and intense time in your life. After reading about sex, sperm, and STD’s, you will better understand yourself and the world of reproduction.
Introduction
Our society has come a long way towards sexual freedom. Gender roles have slowly changed, and so have the issues of family, intimacy, and sexual expectations. Topics once considered wrong to talk about in polite, private conversation are now openly discussed in front of millions of viewers on TV and in the movies. All this information brings choices, however, and with these freedoms come important responsibilities. Many times, there are so many messages about sex in the media that they often just overwhelm teenagers instead of giving them practical advice about real-world issues and problems. Among all this open and straightforward conversation, sexuality itself is still a hotly debated and highly misunderstood subject. Today’s teens live in a world of mixed signals and contradictory expectations. Many times, they are just confused and want answers to their questions about sex and developing.
When a teenager watches T.V., media images emphasizing violence, sex, and drugs try to represent what society wants to see. In reality, these images are unrealistic and unhealthy. Teens need to make good choices about expressing themselves sexually, and each teen has the power to do so. As children of the previous generation become parents of the new generation, shifting values show some of the natural conflicts between growing up and growing old. "Do as I say, and
