SECTION I: UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY, STRESS, AND UNHAPPINESS
Chapter 1 What Exactly is Anxiety
Every one of us will always feel anxious once in a while and that's a normal condition. In fact, it's believed that a certain level of anxiety is not only normal but also helpful in certain situations. Are you wondering how anxiety can be helpful after all the problems associated with it? It's understandable for people having anxiety disorder to be skeptical about anxiety being helpful in any way, however, your response to danger is often as a result of anxiety. Anxious feelings happen to be our normal response to a condition where we are under pressure like speaking in front of a large audience or sitting for an exam. It motivates us to take action in the face of danger.
So, what is anxiety? It's an emotion that is associated with a state of inner turmoil that is unpleasant and often characterized by nervous behavior like rumination, pacing back and forth and somatic complaints. It can also be described as a subjectively distasteful feeling of fear of certain events anticipated to take place like the feeling of imminent death. Unlike fear which is our response to the perceived or real threat, anxiety is the expectation of a future threat. It actually has to do with feelings of worry, and uneasiness. Anxiety is generally perceived as an overreaction to circumstances that are just subjectively viewed as menacing. Anxiety is usually accompanied by restlessness, muscular tension, and concentration problems. Although as I earlier mentioned, anxiety has several benefits, however, when it has become a regular experience, then you may really have anxiety disorder. To find out more about anxiety disorder, check chapter... Individuals experiencing anxiety may actually withdraw from the situations that initially caused the anxiety. So in summary, anxiety is:
A state of uncertainty, apprehension, and fear as a result of anticipation of a fantasized or realistic threatening situation or event which often ends up impairing psychological and physical functioning. It’s a state of apprehension and uneasiness regarding future uncertainties.
So anxiety happens when we think or act in an apprehensive way. Now, anxiety is not by a genetic, chemical or biological problem but it's a product of a specific style of behavior.
Anxiety could be perceived by some individuals as a disease, but it’s not a disease. It's just a psychological and emotional state that we find ourselves when we behave apprehensively. The main cause of anxiety is an apprehensive behavior like worry. Generally, we become scared when we think that something or someone we care about (ourselves included) could be in harm's way. Unlike people that are anxious normally, overly anxious persons perceive danger more frequently and to a greater extent than those that are not so anxious and this overly anxious behavior is responsible for the problems we experience with anxiety. Although the negative effects of chronic anxiety may feel like an uncontrollable, random and unknown health problem, there are several ways to deal with problematic anxiety effectively, however, a lot of people find it difficult to deal with the problem of anxiety. Never mind, you will discover effective ways to deal with anxiety and stress which will also usher in happiness into your life.
Why does It last so Long?
Often times, people suffer from anxiety for a prolonged time and it gradually turns into a life problem leading to a never-ending circle. This is caused by several factors: Some people have an anxious personality making them worry all the time. Such people will probably have a habit of feeling anxious most of the time. There are also a set of people who passed through stressful situations for several years and finally developed the habit of constantly being anxious. Let’s take a look at some reasons why anxiety tends to persist for long.
The Fear of Fear
When you have experienced anxiety before in a certain situation, there is a possibility that you will predict the feeling of anxiety again. This will and can frighten you due to the symptoms you once experienced and this in turn causes you to experience the same symptoms you are afraid of.
