Chapter One
Harry Bravo was ready to become anyone – or anything- to get whatever he wanted. As a matter of fact, there was no line he was not willing to cross to achieve his purpose.
Let’s wait for backup,
his partner, Mark Derulo, told him.
Screw backup,
he growled, I’m not going to sit duck and watch this one slip away from me.
We were ordered to call for backup as soon as we sight him. It’s not our job to approach!
said Mark, wondering why he had to be paired with this madman who didn’t like following orders. The only reason Harry hasn’t been kicked out was because he was damn good at his job. He could achieve in weeks what most cops of his caliber couldn’t do in months; Harry wasn’t a cop who let the grass grow under his feet. He was an experienced and smart cop, albeit arrogant and proud. While Mark was still debating about his choice, Harry had come out of their hiding and was approaching the subject with his pistol drawn. The criminal they had been hunting had eluded the police for months, but Harry was determined to catch him. No criminal as brutal as Bruno should be allowed to roam free in the streets. Bruno had raped five different women and had killed them to hide his identity, but had left evidence in the third woman. Forensic experts had found his semen in the dead woman’s vagina and had matched it with the killer. A hunt had immediately been placed on him but Bruno was too sneaky for them. He always escaped from his locations minutes before the police arrived. It was as if there was usually someone giving him information about imminent arrests for he always disappeared at the last minutes of his capture.
Harry had requested to be given the job of infiltrating a darker criminal organization but he had been denied. Instead, his superior had thrown the case of Bruno before him as a test. If he was able to establish the easy arrest of Bruno, then he would be given the case he requested. Harry had spent the night poring over the case; observing the evidence and comparing results. By the next morning, he agreed to take the job. He preferred working alone but his superior would not hear of it; the man, Sergeant Roger, had insisted that Mark Derulo join him in the hunt. Harry and Mark didn’t like each other from the first time they met; they never agreed on a single thing, and that had remarkably slowed down Harry’s progress in his bid to bring down the formidable Bruno. Now this was the closest chance they got at arresting the bastard and harry was not ready to blow it. He would not allow anything to stop him; indeed, he wouldn’t mind shooting his partner to bring down Bruno. The arrest of Bruno was his ultimate ticket to investigate a more brutal criminal organization called Moonshine.
Bruno, a huge brute without conscience, was hunting for another victim while Harry was on his tail. The street was dark and quiet, full moon shone brightly on the world below them but Harry stayed in the shadows as he followed the criminal who likewise followed a lone middle-age woman. Bruno had every reason to him now but he still waited, he wanted to catch the criminal in the act, when he would be most vulnerable. Harry looked behind him but found no one following. Where the hell is Derulo? He wondered. To hell with him. Good riddance.
He watched as Bruno suddenly grabbed the woman from behind and lifted her off her feet. One of his enormous hands clamped over her mouth to keep her from screaming, and the other, holding her firmly in the waist, dragged her towards an abandoned garage close-by. Harry followed carefully, as stealth as a cat. Bruno pushed the woman on the floor and ripped off her dress. Her boobs flew off the bra and dangled freely, roughly. One hand was still across the victim’s mouth who was screaming but her voice came as a muffle. Then the rough hand worked on her dress and ripped it off, too, tearing her pants to shred. He had done this many times in the past, and there was no amount of fight the victim could give that would be enough to stop him. He had subdued women bigger and more powerful than this one.
He was already over her, started to have it with her. Harry kicked him at the last second he was about to enter the helpless woman. The kick carried a lot of weight, and Bruno toppled over away from the naked woman. He was dazed surprised that he was caught with his pants down. He quickly regained his composure before the next attack would come. The woman, on the other hand, quickly gathered herself and ran out of the garage while the two men fought on. She was only able to retain her dignity by covering her essentials with the shred of clothes on her.
Harry and Bruno fought like two tigers; Harry’s gun kicked out of his hands, he had to subdue the criminal by physical brawl. Even though Bruno was larger, Harry was not scared of him. They fought hard; kicking, punching, grabbing. For about ten minutes, the men tried to destroy each other, both bleeding copiously, Harry’s left eye was swollen shut and Bruno looked as if he had an orange in his right cheek. Then a sudden shot rang out and Bruno fell down dead, blood seeping from his forehead. Harry looked back and saw Mark standing at the entrance, smoke coming out of the muzzle of his pistol.
Why did you shoot him, you bastard?
Harry was in a rage.
"I just tried to save
