Chapter 1: The Paleo Diet Benefits You
Backed Up With Science
Fad diets come and go, but the Paleo plan has been around for centuries and is not going anywhere. These are some of the benefits you will receive and the basis of how the information was acquired.
Benefit #1: A Healthier Brain: Evidence was provided by the University of Maryland Medical Center that Omega-e fatty acids, also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids {PUFAs}, play critical roles in your brain function. It also plays a major factor in healthy development and growth.
One of the best protein and fat sources comes from cold water fish, such as wild-caught salmon. The fish is packed with the omega-3 acids, which so many American diets are missing almost entirely. The DHA in the omega 3s is beneficial to the heart, eyes, and yes, the brain function!
Benefit #2: Healthier Cells: Harvard backs up the claim that your body depends on a healthy balance between the unsaturated and the saturated fats. That perfect balance is achieved through the Paleo diet.
Benefit #3: The Rainbow Effect: You are receiving all of your vitamins and minerals when you eat from the ‘rainbow’ of veggies. The ‘Choose my Plate’ website can show you how it works. The dietary fiber, potassium, folic/folate acid, as well as the Vitamin A and C are part of the Paleo plan with its extensive array of menu plans.
Benefit #4: Consume Unprocessed Foods: You are eating a cleaner diet like your ancestors which is free from artificial ingredients and no preservatives. Wild caught and organic is preferable when possible.
Benefit #5: Better ‘Gut’ Health: Harvard has determined that the levels of cytokines, inflammatory messengers, are increased when a snack or meal is consumed with highly refined carbohydrates. These items would include white rice, white bread, soda, French fries, etc. You get the idea. Human-made fats and other elements can cause lots of inflammation in your intestinal tract.
