About this ebook

This book contains the best sports and horse racing betting systems from Ken Osterman previously published in two separate books: Sports and Horse Racing Betting Systems That Work! and More Sports and Horse Racing Betting Systems That Work!.

These are systems that Ken Osterman has used successfully at race and sports books. The rules for each system are clearly explained, so it is understood why they work. Tips for improving these systems are also provided.

There are 10 systems in the first half of the book that cover horse racing, football and baseball. Here is a list of the systems with the sport that is covered and the title of the system.

Horse racing

Quarter Horse - The Hidden Speed Horse Angle

Thoroughbred - Best Jockey – Long shot Method

Thoroughbred - Bet the Fastest Horse

Thoroughbred - Show a profit down under

Harness - The qualifier advantage

Sports Betting

NFL Football - The Injured Star

NFL Football - The Hat Trick

Baseball - The AAA Surprise

The second half of the book continues with more horse racing systems, and then expands the offering of sports betting angles with a profitable method for NHL hockey that focuses on underdogs playing on the road. His other method involves a fascinating angle on college basketball. In fact, this method does not involve handicapping teams at all. You are handicapping the betting public, so you don't need to be an expert to use this system. There are plenty of examples that allow you to follow this method in step-by-step fashion.

Here is the list of systems included in the second half of the book.

The Best Sports and Horse Racing Betting Systems That Work! - Ken Osterman

    Section 1 - Horse racing

    Quarter Horse

    The Hidden Speed Horse Angle

Quarter horse racing is a lot of fun and often easy to handicap. Unlike harness or thoroughbred racing, quarter horses run most of their races without any turns. Once the gate opens, it is a dash to the finish line. Because of this, speed is the main factor in which horse is going to win the race. This, of course, is obvious to most bettors and is reflected in the money bet on the horses. Generally, the faster the horse has run in the past, the lower the horse’s odds will be. However, bettors tend to overemphasize the last race of the horse. This angle attempts to uncover the horse that may be the fastest, but whose last race does not reflect this.

To begin with, you must understand what quarter horse speed indexes represent and how they are created. The speed index is calculated using a base number of 100. This number is derived by using the three fastest race times for three consecutive years. These nine finish times are then averaged, and this number is assigned the figure of 100. This calculation is done for each distance run at a particular track. When a horse runs a race, its time is compared to this base time. Depending upon the distance, a specific fraction of a second represents one point.

The higher the speed index number is, the faster the horse ran its race. These speed index numbers are the basis for this system.

Here are the rules for using the Hidden Speed Horse Angle

    1. Today’s race must be carded for a distance of at least 300 yards and up to and including 440 years. This angle is not designed to work with horses running around a turn because of the added dimension of the trip a horse has and the additional significance of post position. In addition, speed indexes for races run on a straight path at distances less than 300 yards and more than 440 yards tend to have speed index numbers that are distorted because few races are carded for these distances at most tracks.

    2. Today’s race must be for three year olds or older horses. All two year races are excluded because they have a tendency to improve unexpectedly simply because of their physical growth.

    3. All horses entered in today’s race must have had two starts or more. You will find that this rule excludes many maiden races, but not all of them.

    4. Once a suitable race for play has been found, locate the horse’s speed index for its last two races, and write down the horse’s highest of the two ratings provided this number was at a distance of 300 to 440 yards. If not, use the horse’s lower of the two ratings. If both ratings were earned at a distance of less than 300 or greater than 440 yards, then the horse gets a zero.

    5. After doing this for all horses in today’s race, circle the number that is the highest.

    6. If the highest number is two or more points higher than any other horse in the race, and the number was earned by the horse in its second race back, then this is the bet. It must be stressed that this best speed index must be the second race back and not the last race. If the highest speed index in today’s race was made by a horse in its last race, then there is no bet.

    The reasoning behind this system

Too often bettors will look only at the last race and ignore the previous effort, but a quarter horse can have one bad race and be no worse off for it. You can’t judge how well a horse will run tonight based upon its last race alone. If one horse has the best speed among all horse’s last two races, it most likely will be competitive, and the odds will most likely be higher than they should be, because the speed rating was earned two races back. This type of horse is also a good key horse to include in exactas or other exotic wagers as well as win, place and show betting.

    Special note

Some track programs have supplemented traditional speed index ratings with those of Equibase ratings. These ratings are supposed to be more accurate because they take into account the class of the race the horse ran at as well as the track variant for a particular racing day. Using the new Equibase ratings, this system seems to work well. The payoffs are a bit lower on average, but the win percentage is higher.

    Thoroughbred

Best Jockey – Long shot Method

This is a method that has worked at almost every track that I have ever played. There have been a couple of tracks it did not work at, but that was because there were not enough betting opportunities to make the system worth using.

Although there are certain rules that must be followed, basically you are betting on the leading jockey at a racing meet that is going off at 5-1 odds or greater. The leading jockey at any track has a lot of talent, and not every long shot that he or she is riding should be going off at high odds.

    Rules

    1. The racing meet must have been in process for at least two weeks. It is important to give the top jockeys enough starts to determine who the leader of the pack is.

    2. After two weeks or more of racing,
