Preface
Needless to say that one needs preparation before making a successful bet in a horse race. The conventional method is to study the form of all the horses in that particular race. It is quite difficult for an average person to figure out form correctly. Further more it is in practice not always reliable, because horses are not machines and they do not perform to their full ability most of the time. The trainers do not prepare them to full fitness every time they are sent out racing. Even if they are fit, as for example, a small upset during transportation to the race could make the horse perform well below par. Probably only the trainer and connections have any clue to its fitness.
The large bookmakers who control the setting of prices and their movements have also some clues to the race fitness and the likelihood of a particular horse winning the race directly by use of their information network and indirectly by knowing where the serious money is wagered. This gives them a great opportunity to offer prices that safeguard them and that allows them to maximise their profit.
If we can understand their technique and figure out why prices are moving in a particular pattern, then it may be possible to catch a winner or at least avoid falling pray to our herd mentality. This booklet outlines some of the models I have used to gain success.
In this age of internet technology large amount of information is freely available on the past form and performance of horses and also listings of the forecast prices are available on every horse of a particular race scheduled for the following day. This allows us a great opportunity to make prior analysis of every race. It is this availability we plan to exploit.
The advent of betting exchanges such as Betfair has given us another dimension in betting. Here we can lay as well as back horses. Let us make use of this opportunity. Personally, I have found my technique more suitable for laying rather than backing. However, under certain conditions I do work out methods of finding winners. I also find the exchanges a lot better than bookmakers as a suitable means of betting for a regular modest profit. As you gain experience with the techniques you will learn to pick plenty of winners.
This book is put forward as an alternative to form picking and is only targeted for those who regularly bet mainly for enjoyment or for a small regular profit. It is not for those who wish to make quickly, large sum of money. The four P’s required for success are Preparation, Planning, Practice and Patience.
Chapter 1
Preparation of data – Stage 1
Prepare or perish. Preparation is the key to success in any venture in life. I list below the steps required and an example of the prepared data stage 1.
I use two websites to obtain the forecast prices of a particular race and they are www.sportinglife.com and www.racingpost.co.uk.
I start by rearranging the price data available on the two websites. I believe that the trainer of a horse is the most important person in influencing the outcome of a race. I therefore name the trainer above the horse and then the comparison of prices forecast by the two websites, first the Sporting Life price and then the Racing Post price. The reasoning behind this is that I believe that the Sporting Life (SL) price is based on pure form and the Racing Post (RP) price is based on form as well but modified to accommodate the early information they receive, on the fitness of the horses, from their network of analysts. I give below an example of how it is done. I write it out by hand, but a programmer could possibly design a Microsoft or web program on a personal computer to achieve
