About this ebook

In this book by sports and horse racing handicapper Ken Osterman, he focuses exclusively on thoroughbred handicapping, and has put down in writing the one system he uses at race books throughout Las Vegas, Nevada. He has given this method the audacious title of, "The Most Powerful System Ever Devised for Thoroughbred Race Betting." In many ways it is the most powerful method because it is based upon solid mathematics and statistics. It can also be applied at any track, at any distance, for winning horses, three year old and upward, carded at any track in the United States or Canada.

This method can be used as a handicapping system all by itself, but what makes it even more attractive as a handicapping method is that it fits with other methods. You can use this method first, and then apply your favorite handicapping approach to the remainder of the field. Alternatively, you can do the opposite, and start with your handicapping approach. After finding what you believe to be the winner of the race, you can then apply this method to your choice. This will give your selection greater validity and strength, or it may give you a reality check by pointing out the weakness of your choice.

Along with the title method, there are a wide range of spot plays (angles) in this book, covering claiming races, sprints, speed, turf, maiden races, two year old races, long shot methods, beaten favorites, and other categories.

The following are the titles for each spot play in the book.

    Introduction

I have written several books that contain thoroughbred angles and spot plays, but this is my first book that contains exclusively thoroughbred angles and spot plays. Other books, such as my popular book, 19 Valuable Horse Racing Betting Systems, was not just thoroughbred angles. There were several harness and quarter horse spot plays. The angles in this book are only for thoroughbred racing.

The title of the book comes from the first method explained that is covered, The Most Powerful System Ever Devised for Thoroughbred Race Betting. I call it a method rather than a spot play because it can be used at any track, at any distance, for winning horses, three year old and upward. Naturally, there is not a bet in every race, but I have found it to be extremely powerful, and the best part of the method is that it is often compatible with other handicapping methods, perhaps even the one you use.

Some of these angles have appeared in other publications that I've written, but there are several that appear in print for the first time, including: The Most Powerful System Ever Devised for Thoroughbred Race Betting.

You should always take care when using a spot play system because it may be good at one track but not another. Some angles do better at certain tracks because the horses are simply of higher quality and are more consistent, or they have the propensity to demonstrate their class when racing. This is especially important for systems that stress class or consistency. There is also the issue of the time of the year. Certain systems are going to work better because of fair weather or younger horses, such as three year olds. Lower class tracks with cheaper horses also have angles that will be more productive.

Because I'm here in Las Vegas, I have a buffet of racetracks to bet on. For the most part, I know which races are best for certain angles and at which tracks; however, racetracks can change over time, so you need to be alert to these changes. Tracks can make modifications to the contour of the track, or they can change the surface of the track. I have tried to note which type of track certain angles work best with, if this is something that stands out with a particle spot play. I have also organized the angles by category, so if you are familiar with a specific track, and the type of races that are carded, you are likely to understand which angles may work best for you.

Ultimately, when you are using a profitable angle, it is because it finds horses that will produce profits. This is because they are overlays, and this is the essence of handicapping. But instead of looking for winners, you can look for losers. If you can throw out a significant amount of the money bet on other horses, you will win money over the long haul. You, in essence, are like a casino who always has the advantage in the table games and slot machines. Of course, it is easy to eliminate many of the high-odds horses in a field, but this will seldom give you an advantage in most races. You need to eliminate the favorite.

The following chart shows the odds converted to the percentages.

This chart makes it clear that for favorites that are 2-1 and below, eliminating the favorite will give you a clear advantage. If you are correct in your assessment of a vulnerable favorite, then good handicapping for the remaining field will make you a lot of money.
