It was Friday night, which meant that Cynthia was in her room, trying to keep her mind off what was going on downstairs.

Every Friday night it was the same. Cynthia's father got together with his poker buddies and played nearly until dawn. Sometimes he won, but mostly he lost. And when he lost, nothing good happened.

Ever since Cynthia's mother died a few years back it had been just her and her father, and after his wife's death, her father's drinking and gambling problems had gotten worse. Cynthia had tried her best just to keep her head down, to ignore it all. But it was difficult to ignore when he was gambling away the family's food and rent money every week!

She tried to put on some music that would help her ignore what was going on. Some weeks they spent time at other houses, but mostly they came here to Cynthia's father's house, where there was no wife to nag them about keeping the volume down or picking up after themselves.
