    Chapter One: Introduction

    Six Characters In Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello was first published in 1921. It was originally an Italian play that was first performed in the same year of its publication.

    It is an absurdist meta-theatrical play which explores the relationship between authors, their characters, and theatre practitioners.

    When the play was first performed at the Teatro Valle in Rome, it received mixed reactions. However, the subsequent performances of the play continued to improve. When the third edition was published in 1925, it was a much improved play with a foreword that clarified the play’s structure and ideas.

    The play premiered in the United States on Broadway at the Princess Theatre in 1922. Later on, it was revived in 1963 at the Martinique Theatre where it ran for over a year.

    The play is often discussed among study circles, literary circles, and writers and scholars.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    As the play begins, we see a group of actors belonging to an acting company making preparations to rehearse the play The Rules of the Game by Luigi Pirandello.

    While they happen to be preparing for the rehearsal, suddenly, six unexpected strangers appear.

    The Director of the play is obviously furious at this intrusion. He asks them to explain why they are there.

    The Father tells the Director that they are the unfinished characters in search of an author to finish their story.

    The Director at first thinks that they are insane, but when they begin to argue and tell the details of their story, the Director gets interested and be begins to listen.

    It is revealed that the Father and The Mother had a child together, but they got separated. The mother happens to have had three children by another man.

    The Father tries to buy sex from his Stepdaughter. He tells her that he did not recognize her because he is seeing her after so many years.

    The Stepdaughter is not convinced because she is sure that The Father knew who she was the entire time.

    The Mother meets her daughter after a while and informs her that The Father is her ex-husband. Both The
