Chapter 2
Introduction
Among the American playwrights, Sam Shepard has successfully carved out his distinct place. Several of his plays have been greatly admired by both audiences and critics. Sam Shepard’s plays often draw huge crowds whenever they are performed in different cities in the United States of America. True West
is also a highly acclaimed play by Sam Shepard. The play was first performed in 1980. It premiered on July 10th, 1980, at the Magic Theatre in San Francisco.
Most of Shepard’s plays fundamentally deal with myths of American life and popular culture. True West
is also inspired by popular American culture and the American way of life. However, it has a more traditional narrative than several of his other plays.
It is often said that Shepard is a stubbornly experimental playwright. During and before his time, the kitchen sink realism was inevitably persistent in American theatre, but Sam Shepard defied it.
In several of his other plays, there are several incredibly long monologues, but in the present play, True West,
he avoids such monologues.
The plot of the play is quite tight, whereas most of his other plays lack a cohesive narrative.
The play explores the volatile relationship between father and son. It is a part of the playwright’s continuing investigation of this relationship.
In almost all of his plays, right from his one-acts to his most recent plays, the playwright very clearly seems to be trying to break away from his father’s influence.
The father in the play never physically appears onstage, but his presence is felt throughout the play.
