Chapter 2
Introduction
Just Listen
by Sarah Dessen was first published in 2006. Before the publication of this novel, the author had already published several other successful young adult novels. Through her stories, the author explores the important issues that generally confront adolescents in their lives.
The writing style is highly gritty and relatable. The description is detailed and frank, without hiding anything from the readers. Just Listen
revolves around the subject of rape. Annabel Greene is the protagonist of the novel.
The story describes how Annabel deals with the aftermath of her rape. She has to experience social ostracism and several other family issues.
Although the protagonist has to go through very difficult times after her rape, the novel is not only about depression and misery. During the course of the story, we come across a lot of self-exploration.
Before coming to the other things, it is necessary to know a little more about our protagonist, Annabel. She is a very kind girl, and she always puts other people’s feelings before her own. She is a very kind girl. This very virtue causes her misery in life.
While going through the novel, we come across several social issues such as rape, depression, social isolation, anger, eating disorders, etc. However, we get to know how the characters cope with these experiences.
The novel describes in great detail how certain people pull themselves out of certain critical or bad situations. It can be said that the book can be highly inspiring for its young adult readers.
Two obvious themes that the novel explores are honesty and trust in other people. Annabel hardly ever shares her internal feelings with others, but as the story progresses, she realizes that by keeping everything inside, she is going to be hurt even more.
Annabel, the central character, has to go through several difficult and miserable circumstances, but how she handles the situations can be inspiring for the readers. The novel appears to be emphasizing the importance of sharing our problems with others rather than suffering alone.
Generally, young adults think that they are self-sufficient and do not need others to live their lives, but having gone through this novel, their opinions definitely change.
There are a few characters in the book who think that they can survive on their own, but eventually, when we have gone through the story, things turn out differently.
In the initial part of the novel, Annabel happens to be a very reserved girl, so much so that she does not even tell anyone that she has been raped.
