    Chapter One: Introduction

    Shane by Jack Schaefer was first published in 1946 as a series of three parts in a magazine called Argosy.

    When the novel was published in the magazine, it was titled ‘Rider from Nowhere.’ Later on it was published as a complete novel with the title Shane.

    The book has been translated into more than thirty languages across the world. It is said to be one of the most significant of the novels of this genre.

    In his lifetime, the author published ten novels and twelve other works. Most of his other works are the collections of short stories. He has also written several non-fiction essays.

    It is remarkable that eight out of ten novels written by Schaefer were made into movies. Shane is considered as the author’s most famous book.

    It was made into a very successful movie in 1953. Shane is assessed as the best work of Western fiction ever written.

    Shane brought name and fame to the author and being inspired by the success of Shane Schaefer gained momentum and published two more highly acclaimed novels in the following four years.

    In the year 1960, Schaefer wrote and published a children’s book titled Old Ramon. This book was equally admired by both critics and readers. The book was critically acclaimed by most of the critics of the time.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    The novel opens in the summer of 1889. In the opening scene, we are introduced to a rider riding into a small town. He is not a local, for he is differently attired from the people in that town. He has a black hat, boots, and a belt.

    The rider looks very composed and strong, but he is also very dangers looking.

    Bob Starrett is the narrator of the novel. He notices that stranger and becomes curious to know about him. He is in a kind of awe.

    It transpires that the stranger is named Shane. He stops his horse in front of Bob Starrett’s house. He asks for some water. The stranger is provided water.
