Chapter 1

Clancy’s was buzzing today. Patrick Muldoon has just been discharged from the service. He was coming in for his first day of work as a civilian. Patrick and Tom Clancy were in the service together. Tom was discharged and returned home to start a new firm named Clancy’s Security. Patrick stayed on in the service. None of us, his friends and family, had heard from him for two years. He was on a covert op and could not get in touch with anyone. When Patrick came home on leave last month, he told us he was about to be discharged. He went to look up his high school sweetheart, Jenny. They had been going together all though high school. They were very much in love and planned a future together. Patrick found out through Jenny’s parents and her best friend that she had left home over a year ago and had not been heard from since. Her girl friend had told him how Jenny had changed. She had become introverted. She would show up to work limping, with bruises on her arms..

Patrick had come into Clancy’s and told us the story. He asked us to start searching for information. The last anyone knew she was leaving for Texas. We told him we would get right on it.

Tom hired Patrick the minute he was home from his discharge. Pat is my brother. We have been close all our lives. I was excited for him to start. I had missed him so much while he was away.

Mick is my partner at Clancy’s. He said, Bailey, I have not seen you this happy since Rick and you decided to get back together. Rick is my boyfriend, we live together on occasions. I should really say he is my on and off boy friend. We have one of those hot and cold romances. When it’s cold, I hate him. When is hot, it’s burning up.

We were all going to be traveling to Texas. This would be one of our first out of state assignments. We had to get special permission from both the New York State and Texas commissioners. Rick, who is a cop here in Syracuse, New York, will be going with us. He will take care of the legal part if needed. Plus there is no way he would let me go without him.

Patrick came walking in. Everyone clapped. They all greeted him and told him how great it was for him to be back. They were all very glad he would be working here at Clancy’s. Robin made sure there was a little celebration set up in the conference room to welcome him. Me, I couldn’t stop smiling.

Chapter 2

After all the festivities Tom asked the team to stay. I want everyone ready to hit the road in the morning. Joe, have the van equipped with surveillance cameras and GPS. Make sure all the monitors work and are coordinated with the surveillance instruments include at least a dozen micro bugs. We will wear these at all times. Some will be planted I’m sure. When we leave Joe you will be in charge. You can report to Robin, who in turn will know how to get a hold of me if any problems should arise. Rick will be coordinating with the local police department in El Paso. We want to be sure we are working with them and not against them. They already have a lot of investigations going on in this area. Mick, Bailey and I will be doing the undercover work. Pat, I think you will be doing most of the monitoring. Patrick shook his head. Why? I want to be in on this. She’s my girl and I want to be there when we find her. Tom looked at him with understanding eyes. That’s just it Pat. You are too emotionally involved. It may hinder the case. We want this to go as smoothly as possible. We’re in and out. The rest of the case is up to the local authorities. That was the deal. If we put their case in jeopardy we will be hearing from the commissioners and maybe even the governor. Do you understand Pat?

I spoke up. I’m a little confused. Do you know where we can find Jenny? What is the case that we are not supposed to get involved with? Mick looked at me. I have sources in El Paso. I faxed a photo of Jenny. The guy said she looked familiar. She may be working in that area. I can’t tell you anymore until I meet with him face to face. He didn’t want to take any chances of being hacked with his information. Pat this may not be pretty. Tom is right you need to monitor. I will fill you all in after I meet with him. I won’t leave anything out.

Okay, we all know what we need to do. Why don’t we have dinner tonight and get a good night’s sleep. We will head out at seven AM tomorrow morning. Tom closed his notes and asked Robin to follow him in the office. He wanted to fill her in on her duties while we were out of state.

Chapter 3

We all went home early from my family’s pub. Patrick stayed at Mom and Dad’s. He had not found time to get his own place yet. He filled them in on all of us leaving for Texas. My mom told him to be careful. She didn’t want anything happening to either one of us. She was just getting over the last experience I was involved in. He assured her it would be okay. It was just an in and out case. He just wanted to be there when we found Jenny.
