    About the Author

To all my friends and family who encouraged me not to give up!

I was driving down the road oblivious of where I was going, just needing to get away from Greg, far away so he could never find me. I could not believe how my life had turned around. Now I was fleeing everything familiar and still had no idea where I was heading, I just kept driving.  I had stopped in town before I left and drew R5000 from our joint account which is what he gave me monthly for groceries and emptied my bank account drawing cash, packed my things while he was at work and got in the car and drove, my worldly possessions in the boot. Thank the Lord I never married him.

After one and half hours and stopping only for petrol, I decided to pull into the next town to eat. I sat in a pub and called my best friend and told her what I had done.  Debby said: About time you came to your senses and left that bastard. But where are you going?

I don’t know yet but far enough away that he cannot find me.  He told me he would find me wherever I went and drag me back as I was his and no-one else could have me. Like I am a possession and not a human being. If he contacts you, don’t tell him anything. I’ll contact you when I know where I am settling down. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. Oh, I resigned from work so they will not be contacting Greg to find out where I am. I asked my boss to keep it quiet. Bye. I said with more bravado than I was feeling.

What can I get you to eat? said a waitron with the name tag of Stephany. Anything to drink?

Coffee and a few minutes to check the menu please. I took the menu from her.

She brought the coffee and I ordered a salmon salad.

I pulled out my laptop and Googled the map of the area where I was and what places I could go.  I was in Caledon and heading in the direction of Riviersonderend.  I debated my options.  I would have to trade in my laptop and cell phone as he could trace them.  Getting a new number meant I had to let certain people know and could ‘lose’ others.  I also had to sell my car and buy a new one.  I have a cousin, Rick, who is a policeman in Swellendam and could go there for a while.  He would help me get another car and put it in his name so Greg could not trace it to me. Rick would also get the car deregistered back in Cape Town for me so that it looked like I sold it there. After my meal, I phoned Rick and he immediately told me to come through.  He and Tracy would love me to stay there for a while. I
