    Don’t even think about it! I jumped up from my seat and glared at my brother. I am old enough to do what I want and you have no say over anything!

    Aiden Mathew Jacobs, leave your sister alone! Mom’s voice came from the kitchen. Jacqueline, please come help me get dinner ready. Aiden, go tell your father that we eat in half an hour.

    Aiden poked his tongue out at me and walked out the front door. I laughed and went to help Mom. The smells of roast filled the air. I rinsed the dishes Mom had used and put them in the dishwasher. What must I help you with, Mom?

    Pour us each a glass of wine please. I was just rescuing you from your brother! I don’t really need help, but you can set the table. John has invited the new neighbour and family to join us so set for 4 extra please. Mom turned the potatoes and popped them back in the oven. You can get the trifle out of the fridge and whip the cream.

    I whipped the cream that Dad had brought in that morning and spooned it generously on the trifle and topped it with slivered almonds and cherries. I laid the table for 8 people and set the trifle on the sideboard with pudding bowls. We had a herd of 12 jersey cows and made our own butter and cream cheese. Dad had an electric separator and always ensured that Mom had plenty of fresh cream and full cream milk in the fridge. She did
