LETTERS FROM TANZANIA: Lilian Samuel

My father was on a night shift when a lion escaped from a national park near his hospital - devouring dozens of people in nearby villages. We kept calling him. That night, I lay awake in fear counting down the minutes until I heard my father’s footsteps. He was amazed at the number of hugs he got.

My father is a doctor and a martyr. He is short with afro hair and legs with childhood scars from untreated wounds. As an elementary student, he stayed with his aunt in Ebuyu village.
