A Short Story Compilation - Crystal Tarling

    Renovations

It was the end of the day and I was exhausted. I grabbed my laptop and handbag and closed my office door.  I called out Bye Boss to hubby Bruce and he said good night.  I left the building and got into my car. I decided to call Jill to meet for dinner.  Hey, girl. Meet you at Mitchell’s? Six? Great!

I went home and showered and put on jeans and a silky top. Ten minutes later, I pulled into Mitchell’s parking.  Jill was already there in a booth and had two drinks in front of her. Just what I need! Thanks. I took a swig as soon as I sat down. What a week! I’ve been busy non-stop – mainly all new customers too! Thank goodness for my assistant Kelley. I don’t know how I would cope without her! She really organises my life or I would not be at most meetings. She is also great at finding properties and customers and putting them together.

Great that there is all the new business coming in.  It means you are growing. Is Bruce also getting lots of new clients? Jill smiled. Or is it only your charm?

Hey, thanks. I bring them in, Bruce must work them. I don’t want the daily hassle of the legalese. I find the properties and he must show them to clients and sell them. But enough about work. Let’s order!  I grabbed the menu and we both ordered pasta and salad and another round of drinks.

We chatted as we ate and then went our separate ways. I got home and found Bruce not home yet, so I went to bed. The next morning he walked into the kitchen still wet from his shower. Sorry, honey, I came in so late, I slept in the spare room so I didn’t wake you. I’m heading out to Hank’s. We are going fishing for the weekend. He grabbed coffee and I dished up scrambled eggs and toast.

Great! Jill and I are also out all day. Maybe one day we can diarise a family weekend so we actually see one another? I laughed. Next month’s our wedding anniversary remember? Twelve years.

OK. I’ll look where I can fit it in. I’ll let you know so we can plan together. He kissed my cheek and left.

I sighed. We really have moved apart.  It is as if we are housemates and not married. I got dressed and left to pick up Jill and head to the spa. We were massaged and pampered and painted and came out feeling great.  Let’s call the girls and have a girl’s night.  My place! Jill said and I nodded. We sat in a café nearby and started calling.

Just each bring a plate of eats – finger food.  I have 2 bottles of wine so a few more will be welcome!  After calling the girls, all but Margie were in. OK, let’s go get some platters and go home. Jill said.

At 7 we were all gathering at Jill’s. The girls together are an absolute scream. We had a ball, telling stories and drinking and all took Uber’s home at around midnight. Two of the girls and I lived near one another so we shared an Uber. After dropping the girls, we drove towards my house and I saw Hank walking towards his house. I frowned – he is supposed to be away fishing for the weekend with Bruce! I got the Uber driver to stop and watched to make sure.  I took a photo and then told the driver to take me home.

Back home I tried to sleep but I kept seeing Hank walking towards his house. The next morning, I felt exhausted from lack of sleep and my eyes were scratchy. I called Jill and we went to
