A New Life in a Different Place - Crystal Tarling
Lia
I’m leaving, on a jet plane
I was singing at the top of my voice while dancing around my kitchen when I felt I was being watched. I looked out the window and there was my sexy hunk of a neighbour leaning on the fence grinning at me. I blushed and waved and made haste to the lounge only to have him knock on the door two minutes later. I opened the door and he was leaning against the doorpost with a crooked grin on his face.
Now why did you stop singing and run into the lounge?
he asked. I was just getting ready to join you in a duet!
Ha ha! I’ve heard you singing in the shower and even the birds flew to the next state in horror!
I quipped.
He held his hand over his heart: I’m devastated! I thought I was the next Idol! Oh, well there goes my dream!
I could not help but laugh at his comical look. Jokes aside, what can I do for you today neighbour?
Actually, I do need help and was coming over here when I heard the angels singing and had to stop to listen.
He grinned wickedly. Are you still in the market for a job?
Yes! I need to find work soon. My lease is up at the end of the month and I cannot renew so I need to move. Do you know of a good job for me?
I looked up at him.
Yes, my brother-in-law needs someone out on the farm and I need my wife to come back home so I need to find someone to work for him so she can return home!
Brad turned to sit on the couch.
I went back into the kitchen and poured coffee and offered him his mug. I knew how he drank it as Sharon and I were good friends and they often came over for coffee or I went there.
I sat in the armchair. So tell me about the job.
Basically it is an all-rounder he needs. He runs a property business and the farm and needs someone there for the kids and to cook. He has a maid who comes in daily to clean and do the laundry, but his farm and business are both suffering as he has been with the children since Martha passed last month. Whoever goes there must like children, be able to cook and help him with his bookkeeping. You are a perfect fit and need to get away from here for a while so what’s-his-name cannot find you!
Brad looked at me and held his hands together in prayer.
I laughed: Where is the farm?
Out near Swellendam by the river. It is beautiful and green. They have horses, cows and chickens. Martha used to teach riding, but that has stopped now that she is gone. She had quite a good stable of riding horses. Jaxon may sell them.
He sighed. My sister loved that farm! I cannot believe she is gone!
He must not sell them! We can get the school going again!
I jumped up and paced the room.
So you’ll go?
Brad stood and walked over to the window. At least think about it tonight and let me know tomorrow.
I don’t need to think about it, I’ll go! Just speak to Jaxon first.
I walked over to the pictures on the shelf. My horse Blaze had died 3 years ago. I really missed riding.
Brad hugged me and promised to be back later. He shot out the door and jumped the fence between our properties racing into his house. Half an hour later he came back and told me to
