    JAKE’S BAD NEWS

    JAKE’S SCARY DAY

His eyes are always full of sleepy seeds and goop, his chin itches constantly, and he’s demanding when he wants to cuddle. He barks when someone comes near the door or has the audacity to walk down the road. If anyone is having hugs, he insists on being included. I believe he thinks he’s a person, although not very tall when he’s on all four paws.

He’s majestic, with a wide chest, full black coat that sheds all year round, and has an agreeable nature. He also has a great sense of humor, which he shows off with a wide smile especially when he’s the center of attention.

When he wants to go outside, he bumps my foot and turns his eyes to the window or the door, depending on where we are in the house. He loves to be played with and cuddled, and going for walks, and eating. He loves to ride in a car or truck especially when he can ride with his head out an open window. When he figures out where we’re going, he gets very excited and starts to hyperventilate, running from one side of the vehicle to the other and squealing.

His face is very expressive, and he’s the best friend I could ask for.

    NEVER GIVE UP

Hi, I’m Jake. I’m a Labrador Retriever and I’m black all over except for two very small dots of white right on the top of my head, about six hairs in all. I think I’m about five years old now, but I don’t know for sure.

The first thing I remember is swimming across a big river, and I was so tired I just lay down to rest a minute and catch my breath, and I guess I fell asleep. When I woke up, there was a man kneeling next to me, telling me everything would be all right, and that as soon as I could stand up, I should follow him home. While we were walking, he asked me where I lived and who my people were, but I didn’t know. I was less than a year old, and I never paid attention to where I lived; I never expected to be separated from my people.

The man took me to his house and I met his wife. I liked being there because there were five other dogs that lived with them and they all liked to play. But when it got dark, the people and the dogs all went in the house and they told me I had to stay in the garage. I was really scared. I stayed in that garage every night for what seemed like a long time while the people tried to find out who I belonged to, but they never could. The people were really good to me, they fed me and took me to a vet to make sure I was healthy, and the vet gave me a lot of shots, but I never felt like I belonged there ’cause I wasn’t allowed in the house. I was so sad. I kind of remembered living in
