Chapter 1

Addison

Addy, get your perky butt moving! Girl, we have got to go! I hear my best friend Kara yelling from my living room. I'm sure you look perfect! You are gonna make us late again!

I roll my eyes, walk out of the bathroom, and down the stairs. ok, ok. I'm ready I straighten my ponytail one last time to make sure it is just right, run my hands down my tank top to make sure it looks good, throw on my jacket, and grab my purse. I look in the mirror by my door and hear an annoyed huff as Kara pushes me through.

Addy, you are beautiful, you know you are beautiful, will you please get in the truck? Kara begs me. I roll my eyes and give a little laugh. I get half pushed out as I find my keys to lock the door.

I look over at my neighbor's house and notice a motorcycle in front of it. Mr. and Mrs. Mainer, are in their 60s, seems a little old to be getting a motorcycle now, but they have been talking about moving, so maybe they need a life change. I think about my dad popping into my life every couple of years. I used to be so excited when I would hear a motorcycle, now I just hate the sound. I look down at my bracelet, it was a birthday gift from him. It is just a plain leather band with a heart charm on it. He would show up every couple of years on birthdays or holidays. He would bring my mom and me both gifts and would give mom some money. When I was 5, he bought her the house we lived in. Every time he showed up, he turned our life upside down. Mom would get her hopes up and for those few days, we would be a real family. Then I would wake up and he would be gone.

When I was younger, I would get so upset, I would cry all day with my mom, not understanding why he kept leaving. As I got older it bothered me less and less. It never stopped upsetting my mom though, she still loves him to this day.

Paul just loves to ride, it’s in his blood, but he will be back for us. Mom would always say as he would disappear. I think that is why she stayed in this small town for so long even though she hated it, hoping he would come back to us.

She and grandma fought all the time about him. Grandma hated him.

Paul has been ruining your life for the past 16 years! I once heard grandma say behind closed doors talking to my mom on my 14th birthday. Think of your daughter, Molly. Paul is hurting her too. They fought all the time. After that day they didn’t talk much anymore. Grandma would pick me up and we would spend the day together but mom stopped coming with us. You could tell how much it upset them both.

I hop in Kara's orange ford escape when I see the look on her face, it is loaded with questions. She starts the escape, pulls out of the driveway. We head to work.

So, you said that Sam has something big planned for you two this weekend? She says with a wave of her eyebrows at me and looks back to the road Any idea what it is?

I heard him on the phone making a reservation at stargazers, that fancy restaurant, for two! I think he is gonna pop the question!! Oh my God, Kara, I'm so excited! I squeal like a little girl.

Well, you should be, you have waited long enough. Y'all have been together for, what 7 or 8 years? You have earned that ring, you practically paid for that law degree he brags about all the time. You deal with his mood swing like a champ and.... Kara begins and I instantly get annoyed. I have heard similar speeches recently.

Kara, enough, he is good to me. He is just stressed. We paid for that degree, it is what couples do, his money is mine and mine is his. I state as we pull into the parking lot of the small vet clinic, The Caring Paws vet clinic, we both work at. I hop out of the truck and start walking inside.

Addy, I'm sorry. She runs up to me. I am sorry. But Sweety, I just have seen y'all struggle, I have seen y'all arguing and I just worry. She grabs my arm and pulls me into a hug. You have been my best friend since the 5th grade when the cool popular girl sat down with the nerdy girl that always had her nose in her book. She looks up at me and smiles You're like a sister to me and I think you deserve so much better! she pokes my nose with a goofy grin.

I know, I just love him. I know that it will get better.

Okay, as long as your happy I will leave it alone. She opens the door and skips inside. I roll my eyes because we both know she won't leave it alone.

I walk in the door when I hear Kara, I know I said y'all can wear what y'all want as long as it's animal-related but do you think a shirt that says Keep your filthy paws off my silky drawers is work appropriate?

Hey, it has a cute little cat on it, see? She pulls her shirt away from her stomach to emphasize the fact it has a cat on it. See it's little paws? And it's wearing silky drawers!

Zach, the vet and Kara's older brother, rolls his eyes You know when I was little and mom was pregnant with you, I prayed every night for a brother, and then I was stuck with you. He laughs and starts to walk back into his office, he glances back at me. Hey Addy, I'm glad one of you knows how to dress for work. Kara sticks her tongue out at him and he sticks his back out at her. I giggle and walk over to the cabinets by the back door and put my purse in there when the phone rings. Kara answers it and starts talking to the patient.

Zach is 6 years older than Kara and me. He started working with Mr. Bans, the previous vet that owned the clinic right after college, and 2 years later Mr. Bans retired and handed the clinic over to Zach, a year later he offered Kara and me a job to work with him. We live in a small town and growing up we were all so close we were more like family than friends. He got stuck with two sisters, but he has always been so nice to both of us. He would let us tag along with him to do everything he did.

That is how I met Sam. Sam and his older brother, Eric, were new in town and Zach started hanging out with Eric. We were seniors in high school when Sam finally noticed me. We were all hanging out at Kara's house, swimming in the pool when he splashed me with water. By the time I had wiped my face, he was in front of me, he smiled and then kissed me. I told him I only let boyfriends kiss me. That is when he said okay then I'm your boyfriend and kissed me again. The rest of the year we were inseparable. I love thinking back to that time, everything was so much simpler and less stressful, but I know that we will get back to that.

Here lately, he has been so stressed out, he graduated from college and started a new job with a big law firm a year ago. While he was in college, I went to vet tech school and then worked at the vet clinic and he worked 2 days a week at a dairy freeze. We moved in together right after I finished school.

My grandma was one of my favorite people. She always supported anything I wanted to do, when I was 6, I wanted to be a princess. Grandma took me out and bought me a beautiful dress and tiara. I wore it around for months. When I was 14, I told her I wanted to be a vet. We went on a road trip to visit all the best colleges. She was a little disappointed when I decided to go to be a vet tech. She made me promise I would finish my vet degree as soon as I could.

When my grandma passed away, she left me her house and a bit of money, so Sam and I moved into her house. That way we weren’t paying rent anymore and could save some money. We talked about me going back to school then but decided that we needed to wait till he finished school. Then he asked me to wait till he got a job and was working for a bit. Which made sense, that way we made sure we had the money to pay bills.

Before I know it, it was time to go home. Kara was walking the final patient to the door explaining the medication for the woman's little Shih Tzu for the 10th time. The woman still looks so nervous and I understand, you can see how much this woman loves her dogs, she is here every time her dogs sneeze. Kara thinks it's annoying, but those dogs are all this woman has left. I grab mine and Kara's jackets and get my purse out of the cabinet.

I swear, Mrs. Mitchel is such a sweet woman but does she not have anything else to waste her money on? Kara comes back around the counter and looks exhausted.

This time Cookie really was sick. Poor thing hadn't eaten in days and she wasn't moving off the couch. I copy the speech Mrs. Mitchel gave this afternoon when she came in.

That is probably because the dog is almost 25 pounds when it is only supposed to be 7 pounds. Poor cookie needs to go on a diet. Kara rolls her eyes and slides her Star Wars jacket on.

Hey girls, there is no need to turn the lights off and stuff, I have an emergency coming in, so I'm gonna stay for a little bit. Zach walks out of his office. No, I don't need y'all to stay, I'm a big boy I will be fine, you two have fun tonight. Kara said you got big plans for tonight Adds. He says with the same wave of his eyebrows that Kara did this morning.

I hope so. I blush and hug him. I will see you Monday!

Kara and I almost run out the door before he could change his mind. We hear a roar as we walk out the door and we both look at the road. At least 20 motorcycles ride down the road in front of the clinic.

I would let him or him or him take me for a ride anytime. Ooo or him. I can almost see the drool coming out the side of her mouth.

Not really my type, sure they are all good-looking but from what I hear they treat their girlfriends like property instead of human beings.

I heard what Cindy was saying but she has always been a bit of a bitch, she always has something horrible to say about the guys she dates after they realize what she is and they break up with her. She says with an aggravated look on her face.

Cindy started dating Zach 4 years ago when she came into the clinic with a big husky that looked like it was starving. She said that she had found it on the side of the road. We realized it had been hit by a car so we rushed him back and got fluids into him to help stabilize him. Zach told her she could come back tomorrow and pick him up. When she came back Zach asked her out. For a few months, Kara and I thought he had found the one. But then about six months into the relationship she stopped coming around the clinic as much. Zach always looked exhausted. We would hear them arguing over the phone and then about 2 weeks later Kara and I pull into the parking lot and the front window of the clinic was broken. Zach was inside sweeping up the glass and talking on the phone with the insurance company. We asked what happened all he said was Cindy. We later found out that he had caught her cheating on him and broke up with her. She went crazy. She stole his car and he found it here at the clinic. She went around town telling everyone that Zach beat her and ruined business at the clinic for a little bit. About a year later, she was going around talking bad about another guy. I think people got tired of feeling sorry for her and stopped believing her stories after so many.

Chapter 2

Addison

I open the back door of the edge and sit my stuff in there. When I turn around a little silver sports car pulls into the lot.

Do you think that’s the emergency? I look over at Kara and ask.

Nope, I think that is for you. Kara looks at me puzzled and climbs into the driver seat. I look over and see Sam in the car as he pulls in front of the edge. I almost fall over, maybe he rented it. We don’t have the money to buy it. We just talked about getting a new car a week ago and both agreed we needed to save some more money before we bought something new. I wonder why he isn’t driving our car. What is going on? So many thoughts are going through my head that I can barely think straight.

"Hey Babe, what do you think? Sam says glowing with excitement as he gets out and taps the top of the car.

Umm, is it a rental? I ask hesitantly.

Well babe, the Corolla finally died this morning. When I took it to the shop, the mechanic said there was no fixing it but he knew a guy selling a car for a good price, so I called the guy and her brought over this beauty. Addy, it’s a 2020 Camaro. I couldn’t pass this up.

How much was this deal?

Uhm... Well, it was a little more than we were talking about... it was $20,000.

O, only $20,000. Well, I don’t see how you could pass that up. A deal like that doesn’t come around every day. I roll my eyes. Kara is sitting in the escape acting like she isn’t listening. I still haven’t moved from the side of the truck, thoughts swirling in my head.

Babe, you don’t get it, this car is practically brand new. We don’t have to worry about making it to work anymore. That old piece of junk we had was always breaking down on us. Sam proclaims.

Okay, but how did you pay for it? I ask confused.

Well Adds, don’t be mad. He pauses and I shake my head. I took the money out of our savings account and I borrowed the other $5,000 from a friend. He says as he looks down at the car.

OH MY GOD! You took all the money out of the savings account! How could you do that? My grandma left me that money. That is all I had left of the money that she left ME. that was supposed to be for me to go back to school. How could you take that money without asking me? I ask him furiously. I can feel my face heating up.

I told you not to get mad, Babe. Just get in the car and we can talk about it when we get home. He states. I look over at Kara and she acts out zipping her lips. Of course, the one time I want her to talk, she is shutting up. I look back at Sam. He is giving me the puppy dog eyes while leaning on the hood of his new car. Ugh, I sometimes wonder why I love this man so much, but I do.

Fine, let me get my stuff out of Kara's truck. I look over at Kara again and she hurries up and looks down at her phone. I give an aggravated huff as I get the stuff out of the
