About the Author
Another New Year passed and the start of something new – at least for most, but not for me. I could not face anything new. I wanted to stay right where I was and never move. The pain was too much! Looking back ...
I had everything I could wish for – good looks, good job and my whole future ahead of me. I grew up in a wonderful family – lots of love and attention and encouragement to become anything we wanted to. My siblings and I were all adopted by Ted and Juliette McMillan. I had an older brother Mike and identical twin younger sisters, Kelly and Paige. I met and married the most loving and caring man. He was my soulmate! We did everything together.
After just 4 years of marriage, he was killed in a car accident on Christmas Eve and I was devastated. I just wanted to be left alone in my misery but the twins were having nothing of it. They dragged me out and about and forced me to live. After a few months of moping, I realised that Quinton would not want me to be sad and decided to change.
I had more than enough money to do whatever I wanted to thanks to the life insurance policies. I had over 6 million after tax. I resigned my job and planned. I told our surgery partners I was leaving for some time. They asked me to let them know if I ever decided I was selling out of the partnership and to please give them first option.
My twin sisters are amazing and have started out on their own too. They studied hard and had management and IT degrees behind them. I made the house and car over to the two of them. I had the car serviced. I decided to do what Quinton and I always wanted to do together – travel! I had the whole family over for dinner and told them I was leaving for an indefinite period and travelling.
I gave Mom and Dad R1 000 000 and the twins each R500 000. My brother had said he wanted nothing and he was very well off already. He was also married with a young family. I handed the twins the papers showing the house was theirs and I gave them my car so now they did not have to share their one. They screamed! A week later, they dropped me at the airport and I was winging my way through the skies!
I landed in Victoria and the hotel driver was there to take me to the hotel. There I was taken to my room – or maybe I should say suite? It was heavenly and overlooked the seaside. I was in the lap of luxury but alone! I wiped the tears which started to flow again. I decided to have a soak in the Jacuzzi tub and nearly fell asleep there. I dried and dressed and went down to dinner. It was a lovely place and the food was divine! I ordered fish and salads. After eating and finishing my wine, I went to bed.
The next morning I ate a late breakfast and decided to go to the beach and walk. The hotel packed me a picnic of sandwiches, fruit and water in a rucksack. It was peaceful although busy with people everywhere. I walked all the way down the beach and then just sat and watched the waves while under palm fronds. I lay
