    Chapter One

There was nothing to indicate that she was in the right place. She double checked the small piece of paper in her hand for the address, it was correct. But there was no sign advertising the business, just a plaque next to the door, Suite 307. She turned the knob and went inside. A bell sounded deep within the offices. The place was not what she had expected when setting out to hire a private detective. It was open, clean and well lit. She had imagined something more like the old black and white Mickey Spillane movies, cramped, dark and smoke filled.

A young brunette woman rounded the corner to the waiting area. She wore a white button down blouse, dark blue knee-length skirt and black pumps. Yes, Ma’am, can I help you.

With a nervous smile she replied, Yes, I’m not sure I’m in the right place. My name is Sarah Connelly. I’m here to see a Mr. Bartlett. I have an appointment.

The woman smiled, You’re in the right place. Please have a seat and I’ll let him know you’re here Ms. Connelly.

Sarah took a seat and was again surprised by the quality of the office space. The carpet was plush, the furniture upscale and nice art hung in various places. After a moment a tall handsome man rounded the corner to the waiting area. With a hand extended he said, Ms. Connelly I’m Ronnie Bartlett. Sarah stood and shook hands with the detective. Come on back to my office where we can talk privately.

She followed him down a hallway to a windowed office with a modest view of the city below. He sat behind a dark wooded desk and offered her a seat. With nothing more than a legal pad and pen on the desk he asked, What is it that I can do for you Ms. Connelly?

I’m a little nervous about all this. I’ve never tried to hire an investigator before. She was holding her purse in her lap like a shield and biting her lip. It was clear she was uncomfortable.

There’s no need to be nervous. People come here for a variety of reasons and we keep them all confidential. Bartlett carried on in order to get her to calm down. Let me tell you a little about me. I served in the military, two terms as an MP, military policeman. After that, I went back home and took the test to apply for the police academy. I was accepted, went through the academy and after eleven years on the job I was shot during a robbery while off duty. Can you believe it? I was getting a bottle of scotch at the local ABC store. This guy walks in with a mask and a shot gun. I hit the floor like everyone else and when he wasn’t looking I pulled my service revolver. I gave him the commands to freeze and lay down the weapon. The guy turned on me, I had no choice but to fire. I took some buck shot in the right side for my trouble. Retired on full disability the next spring. Since I couldn’t be a cop I did the next best thing. I started a detective agency. I have five full time investigators with more than 70 years of combined experience. He could see she was relaxing with the conversation.

What about the robber? She asked completely involved in the story.

Bartlett smiled as if remembering the day. He didn’t make it. So, what can I do for you Ms. Connelly?

Sarah sighed and began her story. It’s my husband Brian. Her hands were clenched in nervous bundles again and she looked down at her lap. After a minute she went on. I think he’s cheating on me and I just want to know the truth.

Bartlett had heard this kind of thing many times before. What makes you think he’s cheating on you?

She stared off into the distance as she told the rest of her story. "We’ve been married
