    Chapter 1

H enry, look at that. Henry, don’t you see it? Momma, Momma, look what I see. It is a shadow; come look, Momma.

I woke up from the dream again. It is always the same dream. A boy and his brother are in the barn, and the boy looks up at the loft of hay and sees a shadow or what I think might be a ghost. The boy runs into the house which, by the way, looks just like the house I live in now, and the boy is telling his momma about the shadow.

I normally would not have thought it was a ghost, but now that my friends and I have actually seen a ghost or two, I KNOW it has to be a ghost in my dream. In fact, I think I have actually seen the same ghost in the hayloft in OUR barn.

My name is John, and I am twelve years old. I live five miles out of town on a farm. We moved to Mistletoe, Texas about three years ago. We bought our farm from this nice couple, Henry and Bessie Lee Thompson.

For about two years, we would come up from Houston once a month and spend all day with the older couple. My dad met them one day at the livestock fair in our old town, and he struck up a friendship with them.

When Mr. Thompson told him they were probably going to sell their farm and move closer to town, because as he put it, I am not getting any younger, my dad said he might be interested in buying it. So for the two years, we visited them, Dad would talk about all the farm stuff, and he learned a lot from Mr. Thompson. We bought the farm and moved here.

At first, I wasn’t too sure about it. It is hard work, but we all pitch in and do the chores. My dad grew up on a farm, so it wasn’t new to him. He said it’s always been his dream to one day own a farm. It cost a lot to run a farm and like he said, A farm doesn’t run itself, and Money doesn’t grow on trees’. So my brothers and I work our tails off every day.

That is why I was surprised when my dad said okay when my friend Mike asked me to come to a campout at his house. Of course, if I knew all that was going to happen that night, I might have said no myself. In a way, I am glad I didn’t miss it. A lot of things happened, and maybe this will help me figure out what’s going on at our farm, too.

You see, that night at Mike’s house, we saw two ghosts, a lady and a small girl in a white dress. Mike moved here about three or four months ago. No one wanted to have anything to do with him much at first. His family moved to THE two story house on 7th street.

Rumors have it that the house is haunted. Everyone that moves there will die, they say. Of course, I didn’t believe all the junk people say. My folks have always said that you can’t always believe half of what you hear. It is best to see it for yourself! They are right…if you want to know the truth, you need to see it….and that is what we saw when we spent the night at Mike’s house.

It was Conroe, Mike and I spending the night in Mike’s backyard that night. This was our first of many campouts together. Mike had invited our friend Frank too, but Frank had a doctor’s appointment in Dallas, so he couldn’t come.

Frank is in a wheelchair right now, but he has hopes that he won’t be in it much longer. The doctors are sure they are close to a cure for Frank’s illness.

    Now, I want to get
