About this ebook

Over the course of working with 100's of people, Hallgren realized that negative feelings based on a faulty framework or negative belief system damaged a person's emotional health and functioning. When people modified their faulty belief system, they acquired resources and resilience and in effect reset their emotional foundation. Hallgren coined the word Emotionology to describe her approach to working with people.

Emotionology is a collection of emotional skill techniques that quickly change feelings and behaviors for personal growth and improved emotional functioning. Improved emotional functioning frees the mind to create better relationships, release emotional pain, eliminate drama, and create a new future.

Emotionology Ideas & Concepts: How your beliefs work for your happiness is the first of a series of books on Emotionlogy. Other books in the series discuss the methodology and science behind Emotionology and cover understanding how thinking works and how to change the thoughts, behaviors, beliefs, and values that create your world. This book focuses on one of the tools for rebuilding a faulty framework. The tool is to develop a working philosophy. Here, a working philosophy is a set of freely chosen beliefs that most people find helpful. The key is that a freely chosen belief is an idea one has decided to adopt for use as long as it works.

The book introduces a group of ideas that support happiness and a better world. It builds on a premise: We come here by choice to have a physical life and gain experience from which to learn.
It address issues of judgement, co-dependency, scarcity, entitlement or victim thinking as well as anything that doesn’t support acceptance, self-responsibility and interdependence, faith and trust, and abundance. It is a simple set of ideas that may change everything for you.

    Preface

Most of what we say or do is the result of our personal philosophy.

My thinking is structured by a framework of ideas or beliefs. These ideas guide my thinking, directing my life. They are my personal philosophy.

Since underlying philosophy develops unconsciously over time, you might be completely unaware that your life is the result of your own thinking. This makes you feel like life happens to you, rather than being in control.

Your philosophy is the current in the river of your life. Any glitches in your underlying philosophy could be steering you into disaster or blocking you from where you really want to go. It will influence relationships, happiness, or lack of, and how prosperous you are. Your philosophy determines the flow of your life.

It’s a set of beliefs that go together, but often beliefs conflict with each other. You may believe something you were told when you were young, but then, learn new information that gives you a contradictory thought. Those conflicts create stress and disturb your flow. A part of you believes one thing while another part believes something else.

Your philosophy is a collection of ideas, made up of how you think the world or life works. You may start with one idea gotten from your parents, such as, I am unlovable. And you build other ideas to go with that. You might believe you are unlovable because you are small, large or consider yourself unattractive. In life, we constantly confirm, adding to what we already believe. Perhaps, grown, you now get attention because you are seen as beautiful. You can see that you are attractive, but there’s a part of you that still feels unlovable.

Your philosophy influences everything and unconsciously runs your life; it’s important to be aware of what your philosophy is.

Over years of working with people, I noticed which ideas worked or didn’t work, for happiness and a fulfilling life. A pattern developed that appeared to be a solution for most people. I observed that if a person thought one way, their life would be negative and unhappy. If they thought another way, they usually acquired anything they wanted, were happy, and lived a more fulfilling life.

This book has been written and rewritten for more than twenty five years. All ideas came as a result of working with people and every time I discovered a new idea, this book had to be rewritten. Finally, these ideas worked together for a consistently positive flow.

I call this the Emotionology Philosophy or Positive Philosophy, as it is what most of my clients end up with, when they are happy and done working with me. Actually we never are done working on ourselves - it’s a lifelong process. I try to give my clients the tools needed so they can continue working on their skills, by themselves. Yet, it is always helpful to have an outside person to help one get out of a limiting mindset.

The most practical part of this book is the last section, The Emotionology Philosophy. If you would prefer, begin reading at the end. It is a list of the ideas and developed philosophy that make up this work. The book is outlined so you can find the answers to other questions you might have in the earlier chapters.

    What Is A Philosophy?

According to Webster, a simple definition of Philosophy is:

    - the study of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life, etc.

    - a particular set of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life, etc.

    - a set of ideas about how to do something or how to live

This definition frees me up to propose a positive set of ideas to create a meaningful life and how it works for happiness.

A philosophy is the foundation of how a person thinks and reacts. It is a set of beliefs that work together, which support an overall attitude about life. Beliefs are ideas you no longer question.

There is never one belief. Beliefs come in sets that fit together, unless there are conflicts. Each belief is usually supported by other beliefs and are like the legs on a table. Each leg is a belief and if one falls or conflicts, it makes the others unstable.

One’s overall attitude is the umbrella or flavor of a person’s philosophy – the combined set of beliefs. The flavor can be positive or negative.

Your philosophy is the story you tell yourself every day. It’s the way you think things should be done. It creates your expectations about life and others. It’s what gets you disappointed when
