    Chapter 1: Our First Encounter

My name is Veronica. I am a person who has been infatuated many times. I thought that at times it could be love, but atlas, it was always lust, that is until I met Larnelle. He was the type of guy that you couldn’t take home to your parents. He was the type of guy that would put your life in danger and still you would want him even more. So here lies the story of my first love.

It was the spring of 98’. I was a sophomore at a very prominent university. It was a Thursday and everyone that I knew was looking forward to Spring Break. The guys said it was the time when all the freaks came out. The girls thought it was the time that they could really strut their stuff and me, well; I just wanted to go home and relax.

My sister came over to accompany me to my last exam. We had planned to email all our friends before we left. I knew that I wasn’t going to hear from any of my friends until the break was over. They all planned to do things that I wanted nothing to do with. Anyway, I wanted them to have fun.

As we headed over to the English building, we saw one of my sister’s friends. He was a nice guy. She told me on many occasions that he had wanted to date me. He was short. I never liked dating short guys and I wasn’t about to start. He was with this guy that I had seen earlier in the week. He had been with a group of people that made me wonder if he was a dealer, a drug dealer that was.

He was cute. He was tall, dark, and he needed a shave. He was the kind of guy that I always wanted to date, but was afraid to date. He looked like a football player, but I was sure that he wasn’t on the team. Anyway, Ty yelled out to us. He asked us where we were going. My sister told him that we were tying up some loose ends.

He looked as if he had something to say. He hesitated and said that he had a friend that wanted to get to know me. I just stared at him. I knew that it had to be the guy he was with. Suddenly, I realized that I had seen the guy somewhere else. I’d seen him in our dorm late one night. He was coming out of a girl’s room. I really didn’t know her, but I knew that she had been having problems with her boyfriend.

She was a friend of one of my friends, Missy, who had a lot of friends. She knew about everyone’s relationship. She even knew about the breakup between my boyfriend, Dean and I. He had a problem with me being friends with so many guys. But he had just as many girl friends as I did guy friends. I chalked it all up to him wanting to breakup for Spring Break so he could really have some fun. If you know what I mean. He was a freak anyway.

The guy just stared at me. I knew he liked me. It was awkward for a moment, and then finally he said his name was Larnelle and that he would like to call me sometimes, if it was okay with me. I didn’t want to be in a relationship. I didn’t want to feel obligated to anyone. I said that I would think about it. Ty almost flipped out. He got really angry with me.

Ty said that I thought that I was all that and didn’t want to give his friend any play. He started getting really loud and people started staring at us. Larnelle just started at me. Boy was I feeling the pressure. My sister tried to defend me. She said that I had a lot on my mind. Ty wasn’t having it. Larnelle asked me for my number. I told him that I wasn’t going to have time to talk to anyone.

My sister and I started walking away. Ty continued to yell. He wasn’t about to give up. He was acting like I had hurt him in some way. I knew that he liked me and I thought that he was trying to set me up for hurting his feelings. My sister was shocked at my behavior. I was always the type to be willing to be friends with everyone. I just felt this was a situation that I had to handle carefully.

Larnelle yelled out that he just wanted to get to know me. I said nothing. I pretended not to hear him. My sister turned around and yelled out my number to him. It was at that moment that the most exciting time in my life would begin. I just didn’t know yet. I looked at my sister in utter
