PreFace
Shape Description automatically generatedI am Samantha Laster and this book will shed light on my domestic violence experience. This book will be a source of courage and liberation. My intentions are to share my story in hopes that anyone struggling with a domestic violent relationship will get the strength to leave and begin to heal and recover from the trauma that comes along with being a victim.
I was a victim of domestic violence that began in November of 2011. My husband at the time subjected me to the abuse. I struggled tremendously throughout the years to fully cut ties. The healing process was draining but it needed to be done in order to recover.
I am fully recovered from my trauma and I hope my story gives readers experiencing domestic violence hope and the strength to put themselves first and change their situation.
Currently I am 32 years old and reside in Springfield, IL. I am doing my dream job of directing a collegiate competitive dance and cheer program. I have a 9-year-old daughter that is thriving and is dedicated to dance as well. I’m thankful for my experiences in life that have pushed my physical and mental being around the sun for these 32 years.
Chapter One
Shape Description automatically generatedIt started with 1 DM from him. I'm sitting in my college apartment typing a long-ass paper when I heard DING!
from my computer. Instantly, I got a weird vibe when I saw his name pop up. I stared at the computer screen for minutes trying to decide what or if I should even respond. Let’s just say had I not responded, I would not be writing this book.
He started with small talk, which is 1 of my biggest pet peeves. As he’s asking numerous annoying questions, I finally interrupted and said what do you really want?
It took him 2 minutes to respond with a 1-word answer, YOU
. I asked more probing questions just to fuck with him a little. I knew he was a piece of shit from the beginning, so I do not know why I continued to engage with him. Soon, I found myself agreeing to him coming over to my apartment the very next night. I will admit I was lonely, just had gone through a terrible breakup, and needed someone. So I suppressed the fact that he is a piece of shit to fulfill the void I was feeling at that moment.
He came over that very next night. A friend of his dropped him off and had no intentions of coming back until the following morning. He thinks he’s going to fuck tonight
is the 1 thing that ran through my mind. That was my 1st sign to cut things off, but I ignored it because I wasn’t lonely anymore, and I had the opportunity to make my ex jealous. We were neighbors so I knew it was inevitable that they would cross paths that night. So we talked, watched movies, and ate until we fell asleep. That’s all we did that night, sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night dismissing the idea that he was only coming over to fuck because here we lay next to each other fully clothed under 2 cozy comforters.
The next morning, as he’s looking out for his ride through my screen door, I saw my ex peeking through his blinds wondering who this man was in my apartment. I started smiling on the inside because I knew he was getting angry and jealous. I knew all hell was going to break loose when he left. So I threw some clothes on and headed out with him to avoid it. Doing a small victory dance in my head I realized I had my cake and ate it too!
He texted me throughout the day with sweet sentiments and recapping the night. He asked to come over again and I agreed. This time it
was because I actually enjoyed the time we spent and wanted to see him again. This lasted for 2 weeks straight which drew us closer and closer. I began texting and calling him, and missing
