About this audiobook
A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.
Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.
Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is . . . I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just . . . mildly unhinged.”
Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants of fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.
And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.
From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book. It had a slow ending which made the Piper seem weak which she was not. confusing. All and all good book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/54.5 stars. I love the Chicago Stars series. I had trouble putting this down. It also encouraged me to go back and read Match Me If You Can (Annabelle and Heath's story) again.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5First Star I see Tonight by Susan Elizabeth PhillipsEnjoying this audio book about Pippa and her PI detective skills. She's following Graham the football player with many Superbowl rings and everybody knows him and he gets to do a lot of things others wouldn't get to do.The prince from overseas and all his daughters and Pippa has to occupy their time, shopping. She's very proficient doing that and her life changes as he hires her and also lets her live in the upstairs apartment in the club as she no longer as a place to stay.Lots of bad choices others before her made and it dictates her life now...She is very skilled when others go after him...Love they are able to get the girls out of the country, safe. Many more clients for her and they are easy because she knows her job and can read the minds of others, where they would go, etc.Lots of guns, identities mixed up, her new job-his security guard and club bouncer. She finds herself going to bed exhausted.Like how he jumps to the rescue of the women when it was so unexpected, so much more unpredictable.Like girls game with nerf guns, brought them together to work on girls slave trade they are doing research for. Can't comprehend girls, very young teens having to deal with this.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I really wanted to love this one because Phillips is a favorite author but after I could feel myself pushing to enjoy it, I let go of expectations.
I felt like we never got to really delve into the hero's character and while I enjoyed the offbeat personality of the heroine, it felt forced. Their snarky dialogue felt stuttered, robotic, and didn't always flow for me. The emotion I typically love from Phillip's books was missing here for me. I've talked about loving some of her past books and looking back now and noticing some problematic issues, well, older me caught some slight things (heroine waking up to them having sex brought back This Heart of Mine big issue and kind of meshed together in my mind, rightly or wrongly, and gave me an icky feeling) that I wasn't able to ignore here.
My main issue, though, I just didn't feel the emotional connection and missed the growth of the hero and heroine's relationship; they just kind of verbally spar back and forth and then suddenly they are in love.
This just, sadly, wasn't for me. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5She's back
Over the last few releases of SEP I had gotten bored. Same formula. Stale characters. I had just started to periodically re-read her older books. This one is quite good. Very very good in fact. Worth the purchase! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very enjoyable as an audiobook. Several times I laughed out loud. Really enjoyed these two characters. They were funny together.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What's not to love? Ms. Phillips writes incredibly quirky heroines, your average woman on the street (okay, not so average). Piper is feisty and strong and so out of her league with the big hotshot drop dead gorgeous athlete. Ms. Phillips's knack for writing plucky, down-on-her-luck heroines make the characters very relateable and has you pulling for them in the end. Once I started reading this one, I knew I wasn't going to be able to put it down. Highly recommended.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really enjoyed this one. The characters were interesting and the situation was fresh (relatively). Both of the characters were sympathetic. I read it really quickly which is always a good sign. It made me want to read some of my other Susan Elizabeth Phillips novels which is also a good sign. I like the humor, I like the feeling that although these characters are in way real, you wish they were.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The First Star I see Tonight by Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a 2016 William Morrow publication. This book is simply marvelous! It has been a while since I’ve read a book by SEP, too long, in fact. This book reminds me of just how good she really is. Piper Dove owns her own private detective agency, but it’s barely making ends meet. Currently, her assignment is to investigate former football superstar, Cooper Graham, for a client thinking of investing in Cooper’s new nightclub. But, when her cover is blown, Cooper insists she reveal her client’s identity, which she refuses to do, but doesn’t mind telling him who on his staff is skimming off the top and various other issues inside his club. Realizing that Piper could be a valuable asset he hires her himself, but may soon regret that choice, when she proceeds to push all his buttons, buttons he didn’t even know could be pushed… by anyone! This is one zany, highly entertaining installment in the ‘Chicago Stars’ series. Piper is my kinda gal. No frills, no lace, so fuss, no muss for Piper. She doesn’t have a fake bone in her body! She calls it like she sees it, andis a ‘what you see, is what you get’ person, which is a rare thing these days. Cooper, has lived in a privileged, entitled world for so long, surrounded by beautiful Hollywood actresses and ‘yes’ men, that he doesn’t know what to think when Piper doesn’t automatically bow down and worship him at his feet. So, flabbergasted is he, Piper has him eating out of her hand, much to his chagrin. I loved watching Cooper slowly fall in love with Piper, which is absolutely the best thing that ever happened to him! There is, of course, a mystery to solve when it becomes clear that someone is out to get Cooper, which leads to one of the most screwball investigations I’ve seen in a while. The characterizations are nearly perfect, the dialogue witty and sharp, with a stellar supporting cast. If you are looking for a top rate romantic comedy or romantic suspense novel, look no further!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Another stellar novel from Susan Elizabeth Phillips! I love this series because each book has a couple that is endearing with an enduring romance. Reading the romance of Cooper and Piper made me want to pick up the past seven books, read them and then reread this one again. Cooper is a man who has retired from football at the top of his game. He has set his goals, is pursuing them and everything looks rosy. Piper has her own set of goals and with surveillance of Cooper her first “job” as a detective owning her own agency things are looking good until he spots and confronts her. Cooper and Piper are not likely romantic partners with the typical sweet dynamics…nope…they tend to strike sparks while goading one another in ways that are definitely not romantic. They do become more and more aware of one another as a variety of interesting issues and people are dealt with. Piper’s friends were fun to get to know and it was nice to catch up with some of the characters in previous books of the series. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who likes contemporary romance and want to thank Harper Collins Publishers and Edelweiss-above the treeline for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I have to add that this is one author I have always purchased. I have shipped her novels from one country to the next as I have moved and am planning to eventually have all of them on my ereader.
