Headquartered in Irving, Texas, the Big 12 Conference is a college athletic conference comprising 14 full-member universities, including three private and 11 public institutions, spread across Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.
A member of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for all sports, the Big 12's football teams participate in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the higher tier of NCAA Division I football.
Recognized as one of the Power Five conferences, the Big 12 stands among the top-earning and historically successful FBS football conferences. These Power Five conferences are assured at least one bid to a New Year's Six bowl game and enjoy autonomy from specific NCAA regulations.
Operated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Big 12 welcomed Brett Yormark as its new commissioner on August 1, 2022.
Established in February 1994, the Big 12 was formed by the merger of all eight members of the former Big Eight Conference and half of the members of the former Southwest Conference (Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech). Play commenced in 1996.
Significant membership changes occurred during the 2010–2013 Big 12 Conference realignment, and further adjustments are anticipated or ongoing as part of the 2021–2024 NCAA conference realignment.
