After a disheartening 77-71 home defeat against UCF on Wednesday night, Texas men's basketball coach Rodney Terry expressed his displeasure with the way some Knights players celebrated. In a gesture of mockingly raising their arms and displaying the infamous Horns Down symbol, a few UCF players irked Terry.
During the postgame handshake line, Terry vocally criticized the UCF players, repeatedly stating, "that's classless," and advising them, "Don't do that s***." Even 30 minutes later, Terry remained upset as he addressed the incident in his postgame news conference.
In response to the mocking gestures, Terry remarked, "When you do those kinds of things, it looks very classless, and it also looks like you were just hoping to win." He emphasized that the Texas team goes into games expecting to win, not merely hoping for a victory. Terry expressed disapproval of excessive celebration, stating, "We don't jump up and down and act like we won the national championship."
Asserting a commitment to sportsmanship, Terry added, "We sure don't step on anyone's home court and act crazy and try to show them up in any way. We don't do that." Despite the defeat, Terry maintained a stance against unsportsmanlike behavior, concluding, "You guys won. Hey, we shake your hand and tip our hat to you, but we're not going to let you act that way in our building. You're not going to put your horns down and do all that nonsense."
