The demise of the once-dominant "Conference of Champions" is now a reality, as it succumbed to raids by the Big Ten and, ironically, the Big XII. In just over a year, the Pac 12 has dwindled into the Pac 4, with the timely expiration of its media rights deal by the end of this year allowing every member to depart without repercussions. This starkly contrasts with the ACC, locked into its media rights deal until 2036, providing a thirteen-year runway for the growing divide between the elite conferences (Big Ten/SEC) and the rest.
Florida State University (FSU) is not taking this sitting down. President Richard McCullough informed the FSU Board of Trustees last Wednesday that serious consideration is underway regarding an exit from the ACC. Drew Weatherford, an FSU trustee and former Seminoles quarterback, foresees the inevitable departure, stating that it's not a question of if but rather how and when FSU will leave the ACC.
FSU's leadership perceives the ACC's demise as unavoidable. The conference lags significantly behind the Big Ten and SEC in revenue and faces the prospect of falling to fourth place behind the expanding Big XII. Last year, the so-called "Magnificent 7" schools, including Miami, FSU, Clemson, UNC, NC State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech, negotiated uneven revenue distribution in the ACC based on viewership. However, this was merely a temporary solution. Notably, the Big XII's uneven revenue distribution did not deter Texas and Oklahoma from joining the SEC.
