Florida State President Rick McCullough has expressed concerns that the Seminoles may need to contemplate departing from the Atlantic Coast Conference unless there is a significant overhaul in the distribution of revenue. McCullough shared his thoughts during a recent board of trustees meeting, fueling speculation that FSU is considering breaking its grant of rights deal with the ACC to join another conference.
McCullough emphasized dissatisfaction with the current situation, acknowledging a strong affinity for the ACC and collaboration with ESPN. Despite the desire to stay in the ACC, McCullough highlighted the challenge of remaining competitive under the existing revenue distribution model, calling for a substantial change that has yet to materialize.
Over the past year, McCullough, along with Athletic Director Michael Alford and others, has been actively working to address the issue. The ACC's average distribution per school for the 2021-22 season was nearly $39.5 million, trailing behind the SEC and the Big Ten. Anticipated increases in the gap, particularly with the addition of powerhouse teams to other conferences, further compound concerns.
The ACC's long-term TV deal with ESPN, extending through the 2036 season, presents a hurdle in closing the financial disparity. The potential shortfall, exceeding $400 million, poses challenges for schools to compete in recruiting, facility upgrades, support staff, and coaching salaries.
