Description

Florida State football fans have endured a challenging week, witnessing the undefeated ACC champion Seminoles being excluded from the College Football Playoff. Understandably, this decision has sparked considerable frustration among supporters.
This recent setback raises questions about FSU's future in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Historical grievances, such as disputes over TV rights deals and concerns about the growing influence of the Big Ten and SEC, have fueled speculation about Florida State seeking better opportunities elsewhere.
The latest round of speculation gained momentum after the College Football Playoff committee chose two one-loss teams for the national championship, leaving the 13-0 Seminoles to vie for a consolation prize in the Orange Bowl. Rumors are circulating that FSU might decide within the next month whether to make a move to the Big Ten.
Examining the rumors, it's essential to consider the reasons behind a potential departure from the ACC. Over the years, Florida State leadership has expressed dissatisfaction with the conference's revenue-sharing model. Most criticism centers on the ACC's TV contract with ESPN, extending until 2036, despite significant cuts to the network. In contrast, the Big Ten secured a lucrative seven-year, $8 billion deal with Fox, CBS, and NBC, effective this season. Additionally, the SEC is set to embark on a 10-year, $3 billion deal with ESPN next year.
These new contracts offer substantial payouts for schools involved. Florida coach Billy Napier highlighted projections indicating a significant increase in revenue for each SEC school, potentially surpassing $70 million, compared to the current $55 million. Meanwhile, Big Ten schools are expected to receive approximately $80 million annually from their TV contract, dwarfing FSU's current $42 million.
The recent blow of an undefeated FSU football team winning the ACC championship but still being excluded from the College Football Playoff could be the tipping point that prompts Florida State to consider a move to the Big Ten.
