Description

The recent announcement by the College Football Playoff committee has potentially triggered a new phase of conference realignment. The selected top four teams in college football, namely Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama, have stirred controversy, especially as this season seemed ideal for a 12-team playoff. Surprisingly, undefeated ACC champion Florida State was excluded in favor of Alabama, intensifying criticism.
The decision prompted fans to accuse the committee and networks of displaying SEC bias. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips openly criticized the committee, fueling speculation about more realignment. CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli suggests that the committee's disregard for Florida State signals a lack of seriousness towards the ACC, potentially prompting the Seminoles and others, like Clemson, to explore departure options.
Fornelli remarks, "The biggest impact of this year's CFP process is the death knell of the ACC. We lost the Pac-12 this year, and I've been saying for months that the ACC is a dead conference walking. Today finalized it." Florida State and Clemson had previously explored ways to break the ACC's grant of rights during the last offseason, even though the grant extends until the 2036 season. Notably, changes in revenue distribution, rewarding postseason success, are expected to take effect next season.
