The Big 12 Conference, with its headquarters situated in Irving, Texas, comprises 14 full-member universities across Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia. Within the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I, the Big 12 participates in various sports, with its football teams competing in the prestigious Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A.

As one of the Power Five conferences, the Big 12 stands among the highest-earning and historically successful FBS football conferences. This designation ensures the conference a guaranteed bid to a New Year's Six bowl game and grants autonomy from specific NCAA regulations. Operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Big 12 welcomed Brett Yormark as its new commissioner on August 1, 2022.

Established in February 1994, the Big 12 originated from the merger of eight members of the former Big Eight Conference and half of the former Southwest Conference, including Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech. The conference officially commenced play in 1996. Notable changes occurred during the 2010–2013 Big 12 Conference realignment, with further modifications expected in subsequent developments.
