About this ebook

2024 Summer Games! What if this was equally an opportunity to consider this other game wherein each one of us is an athlete, that of life?

This is what Professor Fomum invites us to. He remains faithful to the vision of an individual's full development which had previously moved the ancient Greeks to whom we owe the Olympic Games.

He discusses this topic using a spiritual approach and, with a didactic style, he reproduces the context and the goal of the game, explains the main rules and gives the essentials for a good beginning and for victory.

Strongly concerned about the fulfilment of the entire being, Zacharias Tanee Fomum also sought to better man's living conditions on earth through science. He holds a PhD in organic chemistry and a D.Sc. for highly distinguished research works, especially in the medicinal field.

    THE EDITOR’S PREFACE

    Dear reader,

Welcome to Paris! Welcome to the Olympic Games!

The Olympic Games are a major gathering that exhibits sporting exploits and merits. It was birthed in ancient Greece about eight centuries before Jesus Christ. The combined influence of political, religious and social factors caused this event to gradually lose its lustre under the Roman Empire until it was brought to a standstill in the fourth century of our era. It is only one thousand five hundred years later that the event was revived, spurred on by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Till date, the Olympic Games showcase one of the major arenas where athletes from around the world strive to stretch their limits in a bid to win a ‘crown.’

It goes without saying that physical activity is indispensable in maintaining good physical health and intellectual awakening. However, we observe that what is recommended nowadays – thirty minutes of walking daily, with regular breaks and changes in position, etc. – would amuse ancient Greeks who did not have the present means of transportation and were mostly manual workers. They promoted sports, not because they ran short of activities, but as a means to contribute to the full development of the individual – paideia, hence moulding him into a citizen who is fully able to partake in public affairs. Having adopted the same holistic approach, Pierre de Coubertin tabled the reinstatement of the Olympic Games at the 1894 Paris Congress. Besides promoting excellence and surpassing oneself, the educator saw the Games as a means to cultivate the fundamental values of mutual respect and fair competition, thereby contributing to building a better society. He further emphasised that "…the most important thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well".

To play host to this edition of the Games, the City of Light has made thorough preparation ranging from mobility infrastructure to accommodation and other urban facilities. Every effort has been made to ensure the success of these Olympics, which come one a hundred years after the edition that last took place there in 1924. And what can we say about all these athletes for whom this event will prove months and even years of hard work and dedication? As the whole world savours the promised performance, it may also be an opportunity to ponder over another game of which the Olympics is actually an extended metaphor: the game of life. Each human is enrolled as an athlete in this game from day one of their existence during which they will contest severally. One needs to be strong, technical and enduring or even versatile, especially when dealing with combined events. Other events will require a good mastery of tools, the ability to overcome obstacles or work in a team. But fundamentally, what is the goal? What are the rules of the game? This question comes, because even at that level, one needs to fight well.

It will take several volumes to exhaust this topic. We suggest you read this new edition to Professor Zacharias Tanee Fomum’s work originally entitled God’s Love and Forgiveness. He also considers the human being as a whole, and discusses the topic with a spiritual outlook. As a matter of fact, the ancient Olympic Games were dedicated to deities including Zeus for those in Olympia, Poseidon for Corinth, Apollo for Delphi. The oath taken before Jupiter in the past has remained a key aspect of its opening ceremony. The present parades no longer end with a ritual sacrifice but rather, they remain solemn. Outside the Olympic seasons, some disciplines are still contested in ‘temples.’ The moral values that underpin our fairness are borrowed from religion. The influence of Buddhism and Taoism has embedded them as the very
