PREFACE
Zacharias Tanee Fomum started his ministry as an evangelist and preached the gospel in evangelistic crusades. God backed his evangelistic ministry with signs and wonders. For example: in the crusade before the one at which these messages were preached, God’s intervening hand caused the crusade to make the front page in the national newspapers.
In this book, we present to you the messages he preached at the second crusade that took place in Kumba in March 1979, followed by the testimony of the conversion of one of the participants at that crusade.
You will be blessed and revolutionised as you read them.
You will be challenged.
You will never be the same.

NAAMAN: THE COMMANDER
Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and in high favor, because by him the
Lord
had given victory to Syria. He was a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper. Now the Syrians on one of their raids had carried off a little maid from the land of Israel, and she waited on Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, Would that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.
So Naaman went in and told his lord, Thus and so spoke the maiden from the land of Israel.
And the king of Syria said, Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.
So he went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten festal garments. And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you Naaman my servant, that you may cure him of his leprosy.
And when the king of Israel read the letter, he rent his clothes and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Only consider, and see how he is seeking a quarrel with me.
But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, he sent to the king, saying, Why have you rent your clothes? Let him come now to me, that he may know that there is a prophet in Israel.
So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the door of Elisha’s house. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.
But Naaman was angry, and went away, saying, "Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the
Lord
his God, and wave his hand over the place, and cure the leper. Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. But his servants came near and said to him,
My father, if the prophet had commanded you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much rather, then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?" So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean (2 Kings 5:1-14).
NAAMAN THE LEPER COMMANDER
Our passage is about an army commander called Naaman. He was the commander of the army of the king of Syria. When talking about a commander, it reminds me of another commander whom I knew very well, Mr. Idi Amin.
I studied in Uganda, and when it was time for me to receive my doctorate degree, it was he who handed it to me. He was the Head of State, a very huge man with a lot of authority. Naaman must have been equally huge and authoritative in such a way that when he shouted he could be heard kilometres away. He must have been a huge man with a commanding presence – the type of man whom many girls would love to marry.
Naaman had won many battles and was the most successful commander. So the king respected him very much. And the Bible tells us, But…
, But…
, ButNaaman was a leper!
This spoils everything. His money, position and handsomeness came to zero because of his leprosy. He was a successful failure because although very rich materially he was miserable and bankrupt spiritually and health-wise. This is a typical characteristic of people here today in spite of their good physical appearance and riches.
ALL WITHOUT CHRIST ARE LEPERS
The Bible tells us that all human beings without Christ are lepers with the leprosy of sin. Whether they are big or small, harlots or housewives, servants or masters, they are all lepers. They may be Sunday School teachers or elders or even pastors but they are still lepers. For what does the Bible say?
All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
All
means everybody except none, no matter their educational level or social standing.
Naaman had a lot of physical strength, but spiritually he was crippled. He was a leper, but since he had that army uniform, it covered all his body so completely that no one could see his leprous skin. And I can imagine people who saw him saying, Wonderful! What a handsome man!
but inside the leprosy was there. He could cover it and hide it from every person, but he couldn’t hide it from himself. It is like some people who specialise in hiding all the evil they do, but this cannot change the fact that they are sinners.
Such people may even study in a theological school, but they will be theological sinners. The educated sinners are the worst sinners – why? Because they are sophisticated sinners. These sophisticated sinners are very dangerous. If say, a truck pusher steals five thousand francs in the lorry park, he will soon be caught. But take the same man, educate him and put him in the office of Director. He will not steal ten thousand francs but ten million, and he will do it so cleverly that no one will catch him. A man in the village who hates you will frown at you so that you could be warned and run away. But a sophisticated person in town will smile at you with a sword in his heart. This is more dangerous.
Naaman covered his leprosy like somebody I met with very tiny leg, caused by a venereal disease which he had caught from a prostitute ten years before and had spent more than one hundred thousand francs without being cured. Now he was going to get married and he was sad because he knew that soon he would not be able to hide his tiny leg hidden by his trousers from his wife.
EVERY LEPER WOULD LIKE TO BE FREE
Every leper would like to be free. Surely Naaman must have been spending sleepless nights wondering how and when his leprosy would get healed. But proud, as many of us are, he would not cry out. A little servant girl in his house talked to him about a prophet in her country Israel. Naaman went to see the king of Syria who was happy to send a covering letter to the king of Israel to whom he had to present himself. Naaman took his illness to the wrong person, the king of Israel. He went with a big delegation because he thought he was very important. The king of Israel, on seeing Naaman, tore his clothes in dismay. When you carry your disease of sin to the wrong person, you get even more frustrated.
Naaman went to the king of Israel thinking he could buy his cure with money. Many people also think they can get salvation or forgiveness of sin with money or by being an elder, a deacon, etc. etc. No! None of that can buy your salvation. You are just as mistaken as Naaman was.
On going to see the prophet, Naaman kept thinking of his position as chief commander and ignoring the man of God. Yes, many people ignore and minimise the men of God, failing to realise or recognise the authority behind them: It doesn’t matter their stature or their level of education. The prophet knew that Naaman was proud and decided to treat him the way all proud people deserve to be treated. He sent a messenger ¹ to go and tell him to go and dip himself in the Jordan seven times and he would be clean.
First of all, this insulted Naaman’s dignity. He
