    Pirates - Lee Cushing

    Chapter One

Edwina Jane, Captain of the Sea Serpent, slammed a weathered hand on the tavern table, sending tankards skittering. The boisterous chatter of the Salty Wench pub died down, replaced by a tense silence. Edwina, a woman built like a frigate with fiery red hair escaping her tricorne hat, wasn't one for theatrics, but the news warranted the dramatic entrance.

Listen up, ye scurvy lot! she boomed, her voice honed by years spent barking orders at the wind and unruly pirates. We've got a job. A juicy one.

Across the table, her first mate, the ever-stoic Nadia, raised an eyebrow. Nadia, with her dark braids and a rapier strapped to her thigh, was the calm to Edwina's storm. Spill it, Captain, she said, her voice a low rumble.

Leaning closer, Edwina lowered her voice, her emerald eyes flashing. The Lady Carmen Rhoades. The Sapphire Heiress. Snatched from her own damn carriage by that cunt, Blackheart Bartholomew.

A collective gasp rippled through the motley crew of women gathered around the table. Blackheart, notorious for his cruelty and penchant for plundering more than just treasure, was a name that sent shivers down even the most hardened pirate's spine.

The tavern door creaked open, revealing a slender figure cloaked in a navy blue coat. It was Isabelle, the crew's navigator, her honey colored eyes mirroring the stolen heiress's nickname. Her voice, usually laced with dry wit, held a rare seriousness. Blackheart? Taking a wealthy socialite? Uncharacteristic.

There's more, Edwina said, her jaw clenching. Apparently, Blackheart sent a ransom note demanding not gold, but a rare artifact – the Heart of the Ocean.

A murmur of awe broke out. The Heart of the Ocean, a legendary diamond, rumored to grant the power to control the seas, was a pirate's ultimate prize.

Someone's playing a risky game, Nadia muttered, jamming her fingers through her luscious dark hair and biting her lower lip. Blackheart, the Heart... this ain't just about a ransom.

Edwina slammed a fist on the table again. No matter the game, Lady Carmen's life is on the line. We don't leave a woman behind, regardless who she is. Whether of noble birth or not.

A fierce grin spread across Nadia's face. Then let's raise the Jolly Roger and show Blackheart the true meaning of a storm.

The rest of the crew erupted in cheers, their voices a chorus of agreement. Sarah, the gruff but kindhearted quartermaster, slammed a tankard down, the ale sloshing over. Drinks on me, ladies! Tonight, we set sail for a rescue mission.

Edwina watched her crew, their faces alight with determination. They were a motley bunch: a former noblewoman turned sharpshooter (Isabelle), a tattooed escapee from a whaling ship (Sarah), and a pair of sisters, twins with an uncanny knack for picking locks (the nimble-fingered Mary and the quick-witted Margaret). All unapologetically lesbian, their loyalty to each other ran deeper than any ocean.

Alright, ladies, Edwina said, her voice ringing with authority, Let's get to work. We've got an heiress to save and a pirate to plunder.

The salty breeze whipped at Edwina's face as she scanned the bustling Cape Cod harbor. The Sea Serpent, a sleek schooner

known for its crimson sails, gleamed under the afternoon sun. Her crew scurried about, the air thick with the thrumming energy of preparation.

    "Any leads on Blackheart's whereabouts,
