Lee Cushing

Lee Cushing is a paranormal thriller author and a lifelong fan of the occult. Having become obsessed with supernatural folklore and the world of horror from an early age, Lee has spent years studying tales of the occult and immersing himself in stories of otherworldly phenomenon. He’s also the owner of a number of vampire and horror-related groups in Facebook, where fellow fans of the supernatural come together to celebrate and discuss all things paranormal.  His debut novel, Voodoo Mambo, blends high-stakes action and shadowy agencies with a dark underworld of demonic creatures and their insidious plots to attack humanity. Lee draws his inspiration from classic horror movies – including Hammer and Universal – as well as beloved TV shows including Doctor Who, Supernatural, The Avengers, and Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

    Fatwa - Lee Cushing

    PROLOGUE

Siamak Azad sat on the seat up front, near the bulkhead, slouched in a large, padded seat. In his left hand was a glass of straight vodka, while on his right hand was an iPad which was resting on his lap. He was looking at the current minutiae of his meeting with the British ambassador few seconds ago, a meeting that had everything to do with the fate of Iraq’s future in the world, and he was trying to internalize as much as he could so that he could relay them to his masters at the Iraq National Intelligence Service, but with the intoxicating vodka that was entering his system and the lull of the  Gulfstream G650 engine, he felt his brain start to shut down and his eyelids start to clam up.

Will have to continue sometime later, Siamak thought, thinking that once they hit Basra International Airport he’d finish the rest of his reading, telling himself he was more than ready to assimilate any further information. Closing the page on the tablet with his right thumb, he decided to check the news for a moment. Always an avid news reader, although in his profession he knew you can’t help yourself wanting to know about what was happening around the world.

There’s always something to know, he thought. Always. He selected a BBC news app on his screen and waited for it to boot. It didn’t take a second for it to open and Siamak was instantly graced with a miasma of headlines from the day before. Among a series of eye-popping headlines, there was one that caught his eyes, and he felt his heart give as he tried to take in what he was seeing.

A turbulence rocked the plane, shuddering the wine glass on his hand and spilling a drop of vodka on the floor, but he barely noticed this. So engrossed was he in what he was seeing on the screen. It was a video of his wife Nadia kissing a caucasian woman. They were in a club of some sort, a mishmash of rainbow-colored disco light from above splashed lights everywhere, multiple bodies swayed and danced around them. Is she in a bar or what, he thought to himself, did Nadia leave the house immediately when I went to the airport?

He knew this was true, but still he couldn’t believe it.

Siamak had seen the woman before. Yes. She was a reporter for the Daily Post. Caitlin something . . . Caitlin Gardner. He’d been surprised when she’d become fast friends with Nadia. Even marveled when they started meeting each other. At first he’d thought because he’d asked his reclusive wife to step out some that this was her way of adhering to his command, he’d even met and talked with Caitlin, a very bright woman. At the time he also thought she’d expose Nadia a little to the world. So much for thinking about that now he was watching this.

That his wife was playing another league struck him to the core. And then the fact that she did it for the whole world to see. What would his masters in Iraq think? The woman he’d courted, exchanged
