Do not be afraid, our fate cannot be taken from us, it is a gift.

The light sounds of the rain hitting the roof echoed through the house as Chris gently walked through the near black hallway. The dark clouds blocked the last bit of light that was left in the evening sky from shining through. Chris stopped for a moment to look into his brother's room. Chris grew an uneasy smile as he looked inside and saw his kid brother was still sound asleep. He carefully continued down the hall, trying his best to not awake Elliot from his nap.
Once down the hall Chris opened the door to his father's office and closed the door behind him. Chris could feel his heartbeat faster as he stood in silence for a moment and an uneasy fear began to set in. At this moment he was not sure what he was more afraid of; his parents coming home early and catching him, his younger brother being awoken and catching him, or actually pulling off the only thing he had been thinking about for the last week. All he needed was a few moments of privacy, and the time had finally come. With his parents away at the grocery store and Elliot asleep, Chris figured he needed to act now or torture himself until he had another opportunity.
Chris lightly stepped on the hardwood floors as he made his way across the room to the long display case. A slight creaking noise roared from it as he lifted the glass cover. His heart began racing faster as he closed his eyes and moved his hands across the soft felt lining of its interior. Upon his hands hitting a solid piece of finely sanded oak, he opened his eyes and saw his hands pressed against the single shot twenty gauge shotgun that has been his mind's only fixation for some time. With trembling arms, he lifted the shotgun from the case and walked over to his father's desk. Chris gently placed it down before turning around and walking away.
Chris noticed himself breathing faster and faster as he walked towards the bookshelf that covered most of the wall on the right side of the room. Chris's father had taken great care to hide his stash of ammunition from his children, however Chris's adventurous spirit led him to find it the last time his parents were away. Chris used the first two shelves as steps to partially scale the massive case, getting him just high enough to reach the second to last shelf. He pulled out three books, setting them on a lower shelf one at a time and exposed the faded old
