A Note from the Editor
I was seventeen when I read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. I should explain that I am not from a country known for being highly effective—though, in truth, highly effective people exist everywhere around the world. Before reading The 7 Habits and applying its principles to my life, everything seemed out of my control. There was a lot of violence in my homeland, Haiti, and I wasn’t sure what—or who—I wanted to become.
I had big dreams to build a better life than what I saw around me, and to say that The 7 Habits changed my life would be an understatement. The book reengineered my thinking, led me to understand that there were factors I could influence despite being in a situation that seemed utterly beyond my control, and taught me that I did have the power to change my circumstances. I used The 7 Habits to build a future brighter than anything I could have imagined.
Teens worldwide—from many countries and circumstances—have all gained wisdom from the lessons laid out by The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. As I grew older and took control over my life, the book stayed with me, becoming dog-eared and worn with use. From it, I learned the skills I needed to leave home, get a college education in the United States, and build a successful and fulfilling life. I took the book with me when I relocated to South Florida and traveled to teach in Bolivia. I consulted it when I wrote my first books. Today, I still refer to The 7 Habits when planning new goals.
It seems fitting that all these years later, I find myself editing a journal based on those seven effective and timeless habits. Here, you’ll find the same basic principles included in The 7 Habits, along with guided journaling exercises and checklists to help you reach your goals in the most effective manner possible.
How to Use This Guided Journal
Keeping a journal can do wonders for your soul. A journal or diary can become your solace, your best friend, the only place where you can fully express yourself no matter how angry, happy, scared, love-crazed, insecure, or confused you feel.
Keeping a journal will strengthen your tool of self-awareness. Reading past entries and realizing how much you’ve grown is enlightening. This guided journal creates space for you to reflect and grow. At any time, you can look yourself in the mirror and say, Hey, I don’t like that about myself,
and you can change a bad habit for a good one. With this guided journal, the wisdom and power of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens can transform you—one day, one week at a time, in a fun and stress-free way.
You can start this guided journal at any time of the year. But it will take a year to complete because it is divided into fifty-two weeks. Throughout its pages, you will find quotes, lessons, insights, challenges, and thought-provoking questions and activities. Each exercise begins with clear directions on how to proceed, and you are often directed to tackle the exercise step by step.
For some weeks, you may dedicate specific days to certain activities and prompts; for others, we encourage you to use the journal’s self-reflection resources daily.
Nothing in this guided journal is random—every activity has been deliberately chosen to help you realize things about yourself that you never knew or noticed.
Have fun and let
