Take Me To Your Leader - Albert V. Guerrera
Introduction
Management is crucial for the success of any company. It involves leading, planning, organizing, and strategizing.
Jesus once told his disciples that leaders should not exercise authority over people. Instead, whoever wants to become great must lower himself to be a servant
As a servant leader you are a servant first and you focus on the needs of others such as your team members before you consider your own. This type of leadership is rare and requires a certain skill set but builds a sense of community within your team. This type of leadership leads to higher engagement, trust, and stronger relationships with team members.
My book is not your typical sales management book but is more focused on the skills required to use this type of leadership and will show you the way to be a manager, a leader, and a friend!
There have been several servant style leaders in history such as Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King jr.
Today you will see examples of this empowering type of leadership in Elon Musk, Jack Welch former CEO of GE, Herb Kelleher former CEO of Southwest Airlines, Alan Mulally former CEO of Ford Motor Company and Boeing Aircraft to name a few.
I believe that your employees should have a hand in the decision-making process when it involves making company decisions and this will create a shared vision for the company’s future and success.
I hope you enjoy and follow my philosophy, advice, and direction I offer you in this book!
Chapter 1
What is a sales manager?
I googled this and this was the definition:
A sales manager leads and supervises sales teams and oversees the day-to-day sales operations of a business.
This person has a robust set of responsibilities including developing the company’s sales strategy, setting sales goals, and tracking sales performance. In addition to that they are responsible for making sure the company is reaching its goals with its manufacturers or vendors.
Sounds like a tall order to me and I believe it will take a lot of focus and dedication to be successful in this role. It also will require organization and good time management skills.
This is a stressful position and the one thing I noticed was that a lot of the sales managers are not doing is keeping their stress levels in check like working out at the gym 3-4 days a week and getting some good aerobic heavy breathing exercise. A massage on a regular basis I found very stress-relieving and relaxing.
The main reason given is that they do not have the time or the energy.
Keeping your stress levels low is a priority and you will need to make the time as this is absolutely required if you are going to remain healthy and productive in this high stress position.
A sales management position is not an entry level position and will typically require a four-year degree or an MBA and some business experience, usually 2-3 years. You may be able to get into the industry as a salesperson and work your way up into sales management.
Sales managers rarely get credit for large orders, but the salesperson usually does get the credit that is close to the order. If something goes wrong though usually the sales manager is the responsible party in the management’s eyes and must take responsibility.
Keep in mind that a sales manager typically works more than 40 hours and may work nights and over weekends to ensure their team meets sales goals.
One of the biggest challenges facing every sales manager is meeting your sales teams’ goals and you will have to be willing to put in the time to meet these sales objectives. I highly recommend if you accept a role as a sales manager, you acquire coaching from experienced sales leaders to help cultivate your leadership and management skills on a regular basis.
