As a psychiatrist, I've long recognized the intricate relationship between our mental well-being and our physical health, including our oral health. Emotions and oral health are intimately linked, and the intricate dance between our minds and our mouths often goes unnoticed.
Dr. Barkha Udhani brings this important connection to the forefront in her book on halitosis named, Breath of Fresh Confidence: a guide for defeating bad breath.
I've seen how emotional factors can profoundly influence our well-being, including our oral health. This book goes beyond addressing the symptoms of bad breath; it explores the emotional and psychological aspects, shedding light on the profound relationship between our mental wellness and the condition of our teeth and gums. It also explains how halitosis or bad breath can affect our mental well-being and self-esteem. Self-esteem and our perception of self are distorted in a plethora of mental health conditions and realising halitosis as a key symptom may help people realise how to overcome some challenges. Dr. Barkha in her work, not only explores these issues but also does it in a way which is beneficial for the patients. The chapters have been written in a Question & Answer format. There are a lot of personal anecdotes and examples along with use of humour.
Dr. Barkha not only creates awareness about Halitosis but in the process also becomes a beacon of hope for reducing stigma surrounding mental health and guiding the patients to seek professional help when required.
Dr. Barkha offers a holistic perspective that transcends traditional dental advice. She provides insights and solutions that empower individuals to achieve not only fresh breath but also emotional balance.
I truly believe that this work bridges the gap between mental health and dental health, and will provide readers with invaluable insights into the holistic nature of well-being.
