      IT’S PERFECTLY SAFE, Aria said with that hopeful smile of hers, which Faye always had trouble resisting.

      That’s what you said last time, and we ended up spending a month at that forsaken place.

      Aria laughed, her light blond hair fluttering. The sound was joyous and melodious. She was the only one Faye knew who could make a single laugh sound like part of a concert.

      They were sitting at the top of the emergency ladder between decks five and four on the Descansar space station, dangling their legs. The metal steps were ribbed, quite cold, and cut into Faye’s back. It smelled like the boy’s locker at school. During the security drills, when
