      BEING KILLIAN

      ANISHA HUGGED ELLIE the Elephant as hard as she could and tried not to cry. Her eyes did sting something awful, and her breath came in quick, shallow bursts, but she was no toddler. She wouldn’t cry even if Mum forced her to go to that awful kindergarten.

      She was curled up in her bed with the lights off, and the door closed. Her desk was barely visible in the dark, and the walls looked gray instead of the usual comforting light green. The air conditioning was humming its usual song. Anisha knew where she was, just listening to the air conditioning. Anywhere on the spaceship Stargazer, the air conditioning sang, but it was different outside their quarters. If she didn’t make any sound, maybe Mum would leave for work at the greenery without
